SCHENECTADY – A city man was killed attempting to take down a tree Tuesday evening, police said.

Gregory Stevens, 52, of Schenectady, had been privately hired to remove the tree when it fell and pinned him, police spokesman Sgt. Pat Irwin said.

Stevens died of his injuries.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. Tuesday at a home on Haigh Avenue, Irwin said.

The homeowner and neighbors reported hearing a loud bang and they came out to find Stevens pinned under the tree, Irwin said.

Stevens was taken to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident has been determined to be accidental, Irwin said. Stevens had been working on his own and not through a company, Irwin said.
