Justin Barcomb makes his living running a trading card shop. Maybe the 41-year-old Hudson Falls native should start a card collection of regional bowling standouts. He certainly qualifies.
Although Barcomb is more known to the bowlers a little further north than the Capital Region, he’s making a name for himself locally by leading the powerful Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League’s average chase at Towne Bowling Academy with a 242 — four points ahead of PWBA stalwart Liz Kuhlkin.
“Me and a couple of the guys came down from the North to bowl in the City League because it comes down to competition,” Barcomb said. “There are some big leagues up North, but there are a lot of rules about who can sub in those leagues, and only guys with certain averages can bowl. In the City League, you bring the best four that you’ve got. It’s very competitive, and I love that.”

Currently, Barcomb’s Broadway Lanes team is tied with Towne Bowling Academy for first place.
“We didn’t have our full team in the first half. John [Pancake] and Eric [Stangle] were hurt, and we only had our full lineup for four of the first 16 weeks,” he explained. “Now that everyone is healthy, we’re back and very competitive.”
Barcomb’s resume is outstanding. The member of the Storm and 900 Global equipment staffs owns 88 perfect games, 40 800 triples and a high triple of 867. He also has a high four-game series of 1,133. The Adirondack USBC Hall of Famer won three average championships at Broadway Lanes and could have won more if not for Steve Rock, who has dominated in that region for 15 years or so.
Barcomb captured a title in the original Northern Bowlers Association, made a handful of Huck Finn Capital Region Bowling Show TV finals, appeared in one PBA Tour stop and rolled in numerous PBA regionals, with a high finish of 17th.
Barcomb and his father won the Turkey Doubles at Broadway Lanes last year, and he’s competed in nearly 20 New England Bowling Association events, cashing roughly 80% of the time and earning a spot in a final four of one doubles event with regular partner Jon Wilbur. He’s also a regular at the USBC Nationals.
“I was the youngest person ever inducted into the Adirondack USBC Hall of Fame when I was 36 years old,” Barcomb said. “I used to bowl in a sport bowling league in Menands [the old Olympic Lanes] and I rolled only the third perfect game on a sport bowling shot back in 2001.
“I would say that while I’m not the typical young power guy, I do hook the ball quite a bit. I’m probably what you would call a tweener in terms of my style. But I’m a modern version. I can hook the whole lane or throw it pretty straight when I need to.”
He currently only bowls in two leagues per week along with tournaments on the weekends. He used to bowl more often, but he contracted Lyme disease in 2009.
“I got sick, and it cost me a couple of seasons,” he said. “By the time I came back, I had a different outlook on the game. I pick and choose how much I bowl now. I’m 41, and I would love to chase my dream of competing on the national tour when I turn 50. I’d like to bowl on the PBA50 Tour. When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a pro bowler.”
Barcomb, who with wife Stacey has four children, gives a lot of credit for his consistent game to Broadway Lane pro shop operator Brandon Bickford.
“He always takes care of me,” he said.
When he’s not bowling or spending time with his family, Barcomb is running his trading card shop.
“I opened the shop in 2018 after I lost my job after a long career as a retail manager,” he said. “They did away with my position. In the beginning, it was a little bit of a struggle, but business is good now. I would say it’s returned to what it was in the 1990s. Since COVID, the card collector business has taken off.”
So has his game.
