High schools: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys’ lacrosse defeats Niskayuna

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys’ lacrosse team scored its program’s first-ever win over Niskayuna with a 13-8 victory Friday in Suburban Council play. 

“We felt confident going in, but you’ve got to go out and prove it,” Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake coach Tom Schwan said.

Rocco Mareno led the way in the win putting up two goals and three assists while winning 20 of 25 faceoffs. Kevin Carney added four goals and Jack Scalise scored three, and goalie Tyler Manning made 12 saves

The Spartans raced to an early 8-2 lead.

“It was good for us to get off to that good start,” Schwan said. “Great for our confidence.”

Niskayuna pulled within 8-6 at the half, but Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake used a 3-0 third quarter to open up a comfortable lead. 

For Niskayuna, Braeden Kerr had three goals and an assist, and Lucas Klokiw chipped in with two goals and two assists.

O’SHAUGHNESSY STARS FOR CBA

Michael O’Shaughnessy hit a home run, doubled twice, scored two runs and had five RBIs in CBA’s 8-4 Suburban Council baseball win against Shenendehowa. Also for CBA, Jack Gailanella reached base three times and score three runs. Jack Griffin had two hits and three RBIs for the Plainsmen.

Guilderland secured a 7-2 win against Schenectady. In the victory, Ty Santabarbara struck out eight and allowed one run in five innings to pick up the pitching win, Evan Schreivogl hit a home run, Dan Keaney tripled, and Calvin Gray had three hits and two RBIs. David Bernard and Xander Canfield each had two hits for Schenectady.

Albany Academy produced a 12-0 Colonial Council win against Schalmont. Alex Gay struck out eight batters and allowed one hit in 4 2-3 innings of the five-inning game, and Aidan O’Keefe and Gianni Dicerbo each had three RBIs.

Ichabod Crane won 16-3 against Lansingburgh. Gunnar Grethen-McLaughlin had two doubles and three RBIs in the win, while Nate Garafalo and Brady Holzhauer each added three RBIs.

KINDLON, TYLER LEAD SCHALMONT

Analise Tyler went 4 for 4 and scored three runs, and Sara Kindlon went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs to lead Schalmont to a 10-2 Colonial Council softball victory over Albany Academy. Maggie Raymond added two hits and two RBIs. 

Sara Toukatly had three hits at the plate, and pitched a complete game in Mohonasen’s 6-0 win against Catholic Catholic Central. Toukatly struck out nine batters in registering the shutout. Ava Quenneville and Matitza Gonzalez each had two hits for Mohonasen.

Fonda-Fultonville recorded a 6-2 non-league softball win against Glens Falls. Emma Crahan had a home run as part of a two-hit day, Amber Cole added two singles, and Maddy Mott struck out seven batters in recording the complete-game win.

COBLESKILL-RICHMONDVILLE COLLECTS VICTORY

Cobleskill-Richmondville earned a 4-3 Colonial Council boys’ tennis win against Schalmont. At No. 1 singles, Schalmont’s Cole Contompasis earned a 6-1, 6-3 win. Earning wins for Cobleskill-Richmondville were singles players Luke Yorke and Jacob Trendell, and the doubles teams of Seth McDonald and Cooper Van Wie, and Zachary Yorke & Lucas Mahar. The team of Yorke and Mahar didn’t lose a game.

In a 7-0 Foothills Council win against Schuylerville, Glens Falls’ Nick Westfall, Julien Oswald and Nathan DiFirore each earned an 8-0 win, as did the doubles teams of Peyton Catarelli and Trevor DiMezza, and Ronan Westfall & Tim Motsiff.

Queensbury won 7-0 against Hudson Falls. At No. 1 singles, Skyler Allen won 8-6 against Stephen Potvin.

Bethlehem topped Saratoga Springs 8-1 in Suburban Council play. Ashrith Rao earned a victory at No. 1 singles for Bethlehem with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Vincent Devito. At No. 2 singles, a highly competitive match between Bethlehem’s Will Bievenue and Saratoga Springs’ Liam Chartrand ended in a 6-3, 6-7 (8-10) 10-8 win for Bievenue.

Shenendehowa won 7-2 against CBA. At No. 1 singles, CBA’s Spencer Smith defeated David Min. Recording singles wins for the Plainsmen were Andrew Hwang, Tony Liu, Andrew Mayott and Ribhav Mishra. Shenendehowa’s doubles teams of Darren Cheng and Kah Seng Tang, Rithvik Narra and Taarak Ramamurthi, and Yue Ren and Ajay Raju all won 6-0, 6-0.

In a non-league match, Scotia-Glenville won 4-3 against La Salle. Remy Maynard and Ethan Jansen each won singles matches for Scotia-Glenville, while the teams of Sean Fluman and Sam Feinberg, and Xavier Deluca & Jason Battaglia won doubles matches.

Maple Hill won 5-2 against Mekeel Christian Academy. At No. 1 singles, Maple Hill’s Landon Flach won 6-4, 6-3 against Noah Bennett.

SCHUYLERVILLE WINS

In girls’ lacrosse, Schuylerville topped Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth 23-11 in a Foothills Council matchup. For Schuylerville, Amanda Pflieger had six goals, Eliza Barton added four goals and two assists, Macey Koval scored four goals and Anika Buff produced three goals. For Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth, Sydney Hoefs scored four goals, and each of Jenna Bohm, Summer Perry and Julia Dion scored twice.
