SYRACUSE – Niskayuna High graduate Kayla Treanor holds the career goal-scoring record for Syracuse University women’s lacrosse, with 260.
Bethlehem grad Katie Thomson (nee Rowan), is not far behind, with 232.
The disparity in scoring between the respective teams they coach now wasn’t nearly as close on Tuesday, certainly not in the first half.
The Treanor-coached Syracuse Orange defeated Thomson’s UAlbany team 18-11 in a non-conference game at the Carrier Dome, as the Orange outscored the Great Danes 7-0 to start the game and 12-2 in the first half.
UAlbany salvaged some relief on the scoreboard against the fourth-ranked team in the country by closing the game with a 5-2 advantage in the fourth quarter.
“I’m really proud with our effort today against a talented Syracuse team,” Thomson said. “I love our team’s fight and never-give-up mentality, coming out strong in the third quarter to put together an impressive 30 minutes to finish the game.
“We were so proud to see how fast and aggressively the team played, and we’ll look to keep that momentum going into our upcoming games.”
Thomson graduated from Syracuse in 2009 as the program career leader in points and assists. Treanor graduated from SU in 2016 with the goal-scoring record.
Ava Poupard scored three goals for the Great Danes (6-7), and Emily Hawryschuk led Syracuse (13-3) with four goals and two assists.
Poupard’s goal with one second left in the first quarter prevented a 7-0 shutout for the Orange in the period.
Hawryschuk scored three straight goals in a span of less than four minutes in the second quarter to give Syracuse an 11-1 lead.
