College lacrosse: UAlbany women pull away from UMass Lowell

UALBANY On the day they honored the program’s 2011 and 2012 America East championship teams, UAlbany women’s lacrosse got six goals from Sarah Falk and used a huge second-half run to take control Saturday for a 14-8 victory over UMass Lowell at John Fallon Field in Albany.

UAlbany (5-0 America East Conference, 7-7 overall) trailed 7-6 midway through the third quarter following a run of five unanswered UMass Lowell goals, but the Great Danes uncorked a 7-0 run over their own that included two goals apiece from Falk and Emma Weaver.

Falk’s six goals give her 44 for the season.

UAlbany will wrap up its regular season next Saturday at home against Stony Brook in the rivals’ final meeting as America East opponents.

UNION MEN DOMINATE ITHACA

Peter Burnes scored six goals, and Union men’s lacrosse scored nine of the game’s first 10 goals in a 19-11 victory over Ithaca at Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady.

Burnes led the way on a day where 13 Union players registered at least one point as the Dutchmen improved to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in Liberty League play.

The 13-1 start is Union’s best-ever record through 14 games. 

Union also won 25 of 33 faceoffs, while goalies Dan Donahue and Reed Karaska combined for 16 saves.

The Dutchmen will close out the regular season next Saturday at home against Vassar.

SIENA TOPS HOLY CROSS

Christian Watts scored a hat trick and Siena scored five goals in both the first and third quarters of Saturday’s 11-8 non-conference win over Holy Cross.

Jack Kiernan added two goals and Chris Yanchoris made 13 saves for Siena, which improved to 5-8 overall. Siena started hot, leading 5-1 after the first quarter and 6-3 at the half, and led 11-5 heading to the fourth.
