Sports briefs: DeLoid named new Union College women’s volleyball coach

SPORTS Annie DeLoid was announced earlier this week as the next head coach of the Union College women’s volleyball program.

“We are delighted to welcome Annie DeLoid to Union College as our new head women’s volleyball coach,” Union athletic director Jim McLaughlin said in a statement. “Annie’s ability to develop relationships with her players and her experience with recruiting quality student-athletes stood out during the interview process. I look forward to seeing her utilize those strengths to further develop our current student-athletes and build a strong foundation of success for volleyball at Union.”

Most recently, DeLoid served for three years as an assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology. Prior to that, DeLoid was an assistant coach at Averett University.

While coaching at Stevens, DeLoid also was the recruiting director of the DIGS Volleyball Club and coached the club’s 17 Red team.

A native of Plymouth, Massachusetts, DeLoid played college volleyball at Framingham State University. DeLoid graduated from Framingham State in 2016 with a degree in business administration, then earned an MBA from Averett in 2019.

DeLoid starts at Union on May 7.

Previously, Laura Krok led the Union women’s volleyball program. In three seasons of competition, Krok’s teams were 35-43.

NITCHMAN HONORED

SUNY Cobleskill senior Jillian Nitchman, a Ballston Spa High School graduate, was recently named a co-player of the week for North Atlantic Conference softball.

The center fielder batted 9 of 17 with two home runs, a double, seven RBIs and eight runs scored last week.

2 UNION TENNIS PLAYERS RECOGNIZED

Ben Jacobs of the Union men’s tennis team and Marilena Karadimou of the Union women’s tennis team recently received Liberty League honors.

Karadimou was named the women’s singles performer of the week. Playing at No. 2 singles, Karadimou didn’t lose a game in a pair of matches last week to help Union clinch its first-ever Liberty League tournament berth. The victories improved Karadimou’s record to 5-3 at No. 2 singles and 9-9 overall in singles.

Jacobs was named the league’s men’s rookie of the week. Playing at No. 2 singles, Jacobs earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against RIT and a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Vassar. Jacobs is tied for the team lead with 10 singles victories this season.

FALOTICO EARNS AWARD

UAlbany softball’s Katie Falotico was named America East Player of the Week.

Falotico led the team with nine RBIs, three doubles and seven hits in a 4-1 stretch.

Falotico batted .467 for the week.
