Colleges: Mount St. Mary’s joining MAAC in 2022-23

The MAAC announced Monday that Mount St. Mary’s University will join the league starting with the 2022-23 academic year.

With the departure of Monmouth from the conference that includes Siena’s teams, the addition of Mount St. Mary’s will keep the MAAC at 11 schools as full members. For basketball, the conference’s flagship sport, the league is expected to continue with a 20-game schedule with each of the schools playing each other twice.

The MAAC Council of Presidents unanimously voted to accept Mount St. Mary’s — which is based in Emmitsburg, Maryland — on April 22. Besides Siena and Mount St. Mary’s, full MAAC members for 2022-23 will include Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Rider and Saint Peter’s.

Mount St. Mary’s will be the league’s only school outside of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Tuesday’s Liberty League women’s lacrosse first-round playoff game will feature the conference’s Co-Offensive Performers of the Week.

Union’s Grace Heiting and RPI’s Megan Shay shared that honor. Their teams will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Renwyck Field in Troy.

Heiting was recognized after scoring 12 goals and dishing two assists in a pair of victories. Heiting also had 10 ground balls, 12 draw controls and six caused turnovers. Heiting finished the regular season with a career-high 69 points on 51 goals and 18 assists, and she currently leads all Liberty League players in goals per game (3.64). Her 69 points are tied for 13th on the school’s single-season list and her 51 goals already are tied for 10th-best.

In a 17-12 win against Clarkson, Shay scored a game-high seven goals. On the season, Shay has scored 53 goals, which is a single-season school record.

Hayden Frey of Union men’s lacrosse was named Monday the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week.

Frey had a game-high seven points, on three goals and four assists, in Union’s 22-4 win Saturday against Vassar. That contest was the regular-season finale for No. 4, which starts Liberty League postseason play Wednesday as the second second with a home game against St. Lawrence.

Frey scored 32 goals and had 23 assists during the regular season.

Union men’s track and field’s Sam Ahern was named Monday the Liberty League Rookie of the Week.

Ahern won the 200 dash and took fourth place in the 100 dash at the team’s most-recent competition. Ahern finished the 100 in 11.1 seconds and the 200 in 22.27.

Siena men’s lacrosse goalie Christopher Yanchoris was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, while attack Pratt Reynolds earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors.

Siena finished its regular season with a 15-10 win Saturday against Quinnipiac. In that game, Yanchoris made 15 saves, and Reynolds registered four goals and one assist.

Siena next plays Thursday in the MAAC semifinals against St. Bonaventure.

Russell Sage softball senior outfielder Arianna Papas was named Monday the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week.

In six games last week, Papas had four multiple-hit games, seven RBIs and seven runs scored.

With the Empire 8 regular season complete, Papas led the league in batting average (.505), slugging percentage (.869) and on-base percentage (.563).
