Sports briefs: Siena softball sweeps weekly awards

Siena softball’s Mikala Fletcher and Adriana Romano were honored by the MAAC on Tuesday.

Fletcher was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week. She batted .556 with 10 hits, seven runs and five RBIs as the Saints went 7-0 last week. She had three multi-hit and two multi-RBI games while holding a .636 on-base percentage and a .611 slugging percentage.

Romano earned MAAC Pitcher and Rookie of the week. She had 32 strikeouts in over 22 innings of work. She went 4-0 with a 0.32 ERA. Romano had a pair of double-digit strikeout games, including a career-high 11 against Hartford. She becomes the first player in program history to win multiple weekly awards on the same day.

RPI’S KOOMEY NAMED

RPI’s Ben Koomey was named Liberty League Pitcher of the Week.

Koomey tossed 6 2-3 innings of no-hit relief on Sunday, helping the Engineers to a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over Union College.

PERRY RECOGNIZED

RPI men’s lacrosse goalie Joseph Perry was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week.

Perry made 16 saves in the Engineers’ 13-12 victory Saturday over Ithaca that clinched the final Liberty League tournament berth for RPI.

HARRIGAN MAKES HISTORY

RPI senior golfer Joey Harrigan has been selected to participate in the NCAA Division III men’s golf championship May 10-13 at Mission Inn Resort and Club, in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Harrigan is the first RPI to be chosen as an individual to compete in the tournament. He is averaging a team-best 72.77 strokes per round.

TWO SAINT ROSE MEN’S LACROSSE PLAYERS HONORED

The College of Saint Rose’s men’s lacrosse players Eddie Baker and Riley Hauf were honored by the Northeast-10 Conference

Baker, a junior attack, was named Player of the Week. He scored six goals and set up two others in last Tuesday’s 14-7 victory against league rival Franklin Pierce.

Hauf, a junior defenseman, was named Defenseman of the Week. He created five turnovers in the game.

ANOTHER HONOR FOR UNION WOMEN’S CREW

For the third time this season, the Union women’s crew Novice 4+ boat has been named the Liberty League Novice Boat of the Week.

The boat of first-years Jordan Whittier (coxswain), Sara Beckwith (stroke), Lena Nowell (3 seat), Julia Cole (2 seat) and Claire Schroder (bow) captured the program’s second-ever win at the Liberty League Championships last Friday at Fish Creek. The Dutchwomen finished first out of a seven-team final with a time of 8:26.000.

DEMOTT RECOGNIZED

SUNY Cobleskill first-year pitcher Olivia DeMott was named North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week.

In last Monday’s 11-4 win over SUNY Delhi, DeMott pitched a complete game, striking out four. At the plate, she was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.

CODDINGTON WINS AWARD

Russell Sage junior John Coddington was named Empire 8 Field Athlete of the Week.

The Amsterdam native and Broadalbin-Perth High School graduate won the shot put at Saturday’s Capital District Classic at RPI with a toss of 14.39 meters. He finished fifth in the shot put and hammer.
