Siena softball loses in MAAC tournament final

BUFFALO — The Siena softball team’s hope of winning its first-ever MAAC tournament title ended Saturday when top-seeded Canisius took a 4-0 victory over the Saints at Demske Sports Complex.

The Saints came up through the losers’ bracket to reach the championship round for the first time. They needed to beat the Golden Griffins twice in order to win the title because Canisius (32-16) went through the tournament undefeated.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Gianna Fazzolari RBI single. The Golden Griffins put the game away with a three-run fourth. Tiara Johnson had a run-scoring double, and Sophia Recrosio and Emily Ilano added RBI singles each.

Siena’s Isabella Pardo, Mikala Fletcher and Adiana Romano were named to the all-tournament team.

The Saints finish the season 32-23. The 32 wins are the most in program history.
