HALFMOON – A Halfmoon man has been charged in a chase earlier this month that left two officers injured, Saratoga County Sheriff’s officials said Thursday.
Matthew H. Smith, 56, of Halfmoon, was charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal mischief, felonies, along with misdemeanor unlawfully fleeing and resisting arrest, officials said.
Smith is accused of leading deputies on a chase the evening of March 16, officials said.
The Sheriff’s Office received calls at about 9 p.m. that evening from several businesses and a private residence in Halfmoon regarding an individual acting erratically, officials said. One business reported the man had damaged merchandise in the store.
Deputies made contact with Smith, but he fled in his vehicle and led deputies on a slow-speed pursuit through Halfmoon Crossing, onto Route 9 and then Route 146, officials said.
He eventually drove into Halfmoon Town Park on Route 236,, where deputies, assisted by state troopers and Mechanicville officers continued to attempt to stop him. They eventually contained him and got him stopped, officials said.
As he was being removed, he resisted officers and two suffered minor injuries during the altercation, officials said. Smith also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Saratoga Hospital for evaluation.
Smith was also charged with several traffic offenses, officials said.
He was arraigned and released to pre-trial services to return to court later.
