NISKAYUNA – A Five Below store and another retailer will occupy the former Party City space in Mohawk Commons.
Businesses are not required to let the town know when they are closing, said town Planner Laura Robertson. However, she said she believes Party City closed in the last month or two.
The over 12,000-square-foot former Party City space would be broken into one 10,330-square-foot space for Five Below, said Rick Flather, who was listed as the agent for the owner on the application to the town.
Another 2,140-square-foot face would be created for another retailer, that is still to be decided, according to planning documents.
The Five Below would open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and have 15 employees per shift, according to planning documents.
Flather could not be reached for further comment. Five Below also could not be reached for comment.
Five Below was created in 2002 in Wayne, Pennsylvania by David Schlessinger and Tom Vellios and sells mainly items priced between $1 to $5, although it does offer some items above $5, according to its website. There are currently over 1,100 stores across 40 states with over 1,500 anticipated to open. The average store size is around 9,000 square feet, according to the company’s website. Sales hit nearly $2 billion in 2020.
“I’ve heard a lot of excitement from my staff about Five Below and generally, the town likes to welcome new retail businesses,” Robertson said in an email.
Other Five Below stores are located in the New Loudon Center in Latham, Colonie Center in Colonie, Crossgates Mall in Albany and the Shoppes at Wilton in Saratoga Springs.
Planning Board Vice Chairperson David D’Arpino said a resolution will be drawn up for the next planning board meeting on June 13 to approve the changes.
