
COLONIE – A 22-year-old woman from Ballston Spa was killed Saturday night when a car collided with the one she was driving on I-87 heading northbound near Exit 5 in Colonie, according to a state police press release.
A 2018 Honda Civic, driven by Katryn R. Fisher, was struck in the rear at a high rate of speed by a 2021 Tesla Model Y operated by Vasu K. Laroiya, 23, of Iselin, New Jersey, the release said. Fisher’s car then struck a guide rail on the right shoulder and caught fire, according to state police. She was transported to Albany Medical Center where she died as a result of her injuries, the statement continued. Police said she was alone in the vehicle at the time.
Laroiya was arraigned in Colonie Town Court on charges of felony DWI, aggravated vehicular assault, and assault in the second degree. According to Troop G public information officer Trooper Kerra Burns, Laroiya had a blood alcohol content of 0.12% at the time of the crash, above the state’s limit of 0.08%. He was remanded to Albany County Jail without bail. The crash remains under investigation, according to Burns.
