LAKE LUZERNE A Saratoga Springs man drowned in the Hudson River at the town of Lake Luzerne Monday, Warren County Sheriff’s officials said.

Officials identified the man as James N. Mittler, 50, of Saratoga Springs. He was taken by ambulance to Glens Falls Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident happened just after 11:30 a.m. Rescuers were called the area of May Road just after 11:30 a.m. for a report of a young child in the water yelling for help, officials said.

Two people responded to the area of the child and assisted. They then learned a man was underwater and had not come up for several minutes, officials said.

At about that time, people in a boat arrived and aided the bystanders to bring the man to the service and onto the vessel, officials said. They then started lifesaving efforts, but he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation into the incident continued Tuesday by members of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit, officials said.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Lake Luzerne Fire Department, Luzerne Hadley EMS, Warren County OES, and Lake George and Corinth EMS.
