SCHENECTADY — Josh Hauge’s first game as Union men’s hockey head coach will be Oct. 1 when the Dutchmen host RIT at Messa Rink at Achilles Center.

Union’s 34-game 2022-23 schedule was announced Friday.

“We are looking forward to the [20]22-23 season,” Hauge said in a statement issued from the school’s athletic department. “Our schedule has some great teams visiting Messa Rink and has us visiting some challenging venues. It’s an exciting time to look to the future and the expectations for next season.”

Hauge was named the Dutchmen’s new head coach on April 15. He took over for John Ronan, who was the interim head coach following the resignation of head coach Rick Bennettt on Jan. 28 following a school investigation into his coaching style.

The game with RIT is the first between the two teams since Oct. 20, 2017, when the Dutchmen took a 6-1 victory over the Tigers in Rochester. It will take place during Union’s Homecoming Weekend.

“We are excited to open our season during Homecoming Weekend and look forward to welcoming our alumni back to campus,” Hauge said.

The team will meet again Oct. 15 at Blue Cross Arena, the home of the AHL’s Rochester Americans.

Before joining Union, Hauge was an assistant coach at Clarkson. He won’t have to wait long to face his former team. The Dutchmen visit the Golden Knights on Nov. 4 at Cheel Arena in Potsdam. The last time Union was there, it was swept in the ECAC Hockey tournament best-of-three quarterfinals by Clarkson. Union will host Clarkson Jan. 21.

There will be another reunion game this season. Union goalie Connor Murphy will face his former team, Northeastern, Dec. 3 at Messa. Murphy, a Hudson Falls native, played for Northeastern for two seasons before transferring to Union last year.

As usual, Union will begin ECACH play against Capital Region-rival RPI. The Engineers will host Oct. 28 at Houston Field House. The series shifts to Messa Rink the following night. RPI won both conference games last season.

The Capital District Mayor’s Cup game between the two teams is set for Jan. 28 at MVP Arena. The Dutchmen won last season’s contest 2-0.

The Dutchmen will play a rare Thursday game Oct. 13 when Bentley visits Messa.

Union will close out the 2022 calendar year when it hosts New Hampshire for a two-game series Dec. 30-31.
