SOUTH GLENS FALLS – Cherie Tan of Singapore, the first-round leader, held off five-time event champion Liz Johnson of Niagara Falls to lead the second round of the U.S. Women’s Open with a total pinfall of 3,339 Friday night at Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center.
Tan, a left-hander, has three PWBA victories, including a major. She was also the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open runner-up.
Johnson, 48, is a 25-time winner on the PWBA Tour, a former PWBA Rookie of the Year and a three-time Player of the Year. She is 10 pins behind Tan.
Meanwhile, Capital Region reps Suzie Morine of Castleton-on-Hudson and Liz Kuhlkin of Rotterdam kept their hopes alive to make the top-30 cut following Saturday’s third round of qualifying.
Morine, a non-member, rolled a 1,483 eight-game block and is currently in 60th place with 2,975 total pins. She rolled games of 179, 178, 148, 216, 183, 173, 221 and 185.
Kuhlkin, the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open champion and a three-time PWBA titlist, was in 79th place after struggling in the first round, with an eight-game block of 1,418, averaging just 177. But she picked it up a notch on Friday, rolling a 1,540 block. She rolled games of 173, 218, 184, 159, 201, 189, 229 and 187. She’s in 62nd place.
Stefanie Johnson of McKinney, Texas is third with 3,287 total pins, followed by Kayla Bandy of Wichita, Kansas (3,284), Erin McCarthy of Elkhorn, Nebraska (3,274), Shannon O’Keefe of Shiloh, Illinois (3,271), and Danielle McEwen of Stony Point (3,269).
Match play begins Sunday afternoon and continues with two more rounds Monday. The top five then advance to the stepladder finals Tuesday night. The winner earns $60,000, and the runner-up gets $30,000.
