A familiar face will be rejoining the Union College athletic staff.

Alyssa Treanor was named the new head coach of the women’s lacrosse team, as announced Tuesday by athletic director Jim McLaughlin. She replaces interim coach Jessica Davos.

Treanor was an assistant coach with the Union program for five seasons, first from 2016-18, and then 2020-21. She worked primarily with the team’s attackers and draw specialists.

Treanor spent this past season as the head coach of Russell Sage, of the Empire 8 conference. She led the Gators to a 2-4 conference record and 5-9 overall mark, and had two players earn All-Empire 8 honors.

“Jess Davos did a super job,” Treanor said by phone. “At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to apply, but I had spent so much time there, and Union really helped form a lot of who I am as a coach. It was kind of a thing that it’s too hard to pass up.”

Treanor said she learned a great deal from her one year at Russell Sage.

“They were different kids, different aptitudes, different challenges. I guess what I learned the most was how to create culture in a team, and relationships. I had a lot of fun with it, and I dragged my dad [Mark] along as an assistant coach. It really did feel like family,” she said.

Treanor said having her father with her was a memorable experience. Mark Treanor coached boys’ basketball at Niskayuna for over 20 years and also finished his fifth season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Union last season. Her sister, Kayla, was a member of the U.S. National Team and is the head women’s lacrosse coach at Syracuse. Alyssa said Kayla and she are definitely coaches because of him.

“I feel like I spent my childhood on the floor of the Niskayuna basketball court,” Alyssa said. “But there’s just something about teaching a group of young men or women. And for him, basketball and lacrosse are really similar defensively. He can actually teach it a little bit because he’s watched it for so long, so I brought him in to be my assistant coach.

“He’s a volunteer assistant at Union, volunteer assistant at Russell Sage and full-time babysitter for me,” Alyssa added. “He thought retirement would look one way, but it totally looks another.”

Alyssa Treanor was a three-sport athlete at Niskayuna, as well as a four-year starter in lacrosse at Siena College, and led the Saints to three MAAC playoff appearances before graduating in 2015. An All-MAAC second-team selection her senior year, she finished there ranked ninth all-time in career points with 110, and fifth in career assists (33).
