TROY — The Tri-City ValleyCats were on the verge of being the first team to lose to the Frontier League’s travel team, the Empire State Greys.

Brantley Bell saved the ValleyCats from embarrassment.

Bell belted a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday to rally the ValleyCats to an 8-7 victory at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The victory extended the ValleyCats’ winning streak to three games, the second time they have won three in a row this season. The Greys fell to 0-35.

The Greys set themselves up to win the game after scoring four runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-6 lead. Liam McArthur scored on Trey Woosley’s groundout. Jordan Holloman-Scott tied the score 6-6 with a two-run single. A wild pitch by Neil Abbatielo allowed Holloman-Scott to score the go-ahead run.

Juan Silverio led off the ValleyCats’ ninth with a single off reliever Holde Bernhardt. After Ciaran Devenney popped out, Pavin Parks walked. Bell followed with his game-winning hit.

The teams meet again at 7 p.m. Saturday.
