
TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. – Denis Phipps just missed hitting for the cycle and propelled the Tri-City ValleyCats to a 7-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader split with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles on Thursday.
Phipps went 4-for-4 with a home run and two doubles, scored three runs and drove in two.
His solo homer in the sixth gave the ValleyCats (21-20) a 6-3 lead, and he extended it to 7-3 with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.
Carson McCusker had two RBIs for Tri-City, on a run-scoring double to tie it at 1-1 in the second and a sacrifice fly to get the ValleyCats with 3-2 in the fourth.
Tri-City added two unearned runs in that inning to go ahead 4-3.
In the first game, Trois-Rivieres won 6-3, breaking a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Steve Brown drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Aigles went up 6-3 in the sixth on RBI singles by Connor Panas and Carlos Martinez.
Trois-Rivieres scored two runs in the first inning, but Tri-City went ahead 3-2 in the top of the second on a solo home run by Brad Zunica and a two-run single by Jonah Girand.
