Brantley Bell homered, Denis Phipps drove in three runs, and seven strong innings from the mound led the Tri-City ValleyCats in a 9-4 victory over the Empire State Greys on Saturday night in the middle game of a three-game set at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy.
Crawford limited Empire State to a run on three hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking two as the ValleyCats won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 23-20 on the season.
Tri-City put up three runs in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Phipps and RBI hits by Brad Zunica and Juan Silverio, then added four runs in the second as Bell clubbed a two-run homer, Zunica ripped an RBI double and Silverio added an RBI single.
Phipps’ two-run single in the sixth put Tri-City up 9-1 and left plenty of cushion as the Greys plated three runs in the ninth before Adam Hofacket came out of the bullpen to record the game’s final three outs.
The ValleyCats and Greys will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 5 p.m.
