ValleyCats club four homers, finish 3-game sweep of Empire State Greys

Jonah Girand hit two of the Tri-City ValleyCats’ four home runs and drove in four runs in a 7-3 victory on Sunday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium that completed a three-game weekend sweep of the Empire State Greys.

The ValleyCats (24-20) trailed 2-0 in the third inning after a two-run homer by Empire State’s Jordan Holloman-Scott, but proceeded to roar back in front with the longball playing a prominent role.

Girand hit a solo shot in the third inning, and Denis Phipps went deep in the fourth to tie the game before Carson McCusker’s RBI single later that inning put Tri-City up 3-2.

Girand’s three-run homer made it a 6-2 game in the sixth, and a solo homer from Brantley Bell — who also doubled and singled as part of a 3 for 4 outing — capped off Tri-City’s scoring in the seventh.

Trey Woolsey added an RBI single for Empire State in the eighth, but ValleyCats relievers Brac Warren and Trey Cochran-Gill recorded the final four outs to secure the win for Olbis Parra, who allowed two runs on four hits over five innings. Bell, Phipps, Girand and Brad Zunica all had multi-hit games for the ValleyCats, who will open up a series against Ottawa tonight at home at 6:30 p.m.
