ROTTERDAM – A tractor-trailer went off the Thruway, striking a bridge abutment in Rotterdam Tuesday evening, spilling the trailer’s contents onto the highway and sending the driver for evaluation, New York State Police said.
The driver, identified as Elder O. Quisquecamey, 33, of Los Angeles, was taken to Albany Medical Center for evaluation after reporting shoulder pain, police said.
The crash happened just after 8 p.m. off the Thruway eastbound at the Putnam Road overpass.
The driver told troopers he was reaching down for something when his truck veered off the road, up an embankment and struck the bridge abutment, officials said.

The crash left the trailer’s contents of canned goods and other food items piled over the remains of the trailer.
South Schenectady firefighters were among those to respond to the scene.
The crash closed the right lanes, then kept the shoulder closed for cleanup until the early morning hours.
