SARATOGA SPRINGS — Gun Runner produced the highest price for a single sale, but Curlin’s overall performance at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearlings Sale couldn’t be topped on Monday and Tuesday.

Eight yearlings sired by the two-time Horse of the Year averaged over $1 million, including one of two at the sale to hit the $2 million mark.

That was a chestnut filly out of America purchased jointly by West Point Thoroughbreds, Woodford Racing and 3C Stable on Tuesday. Celebrity chef Bobby Flay bred the filly.

The sale was nearly complete when the sale topper, hip No. 202, rolled through the auction ring.

Peter Brant (White Birch Farm) and M.V. Magnier bought the dark bay/brown colt for $2.3 million.

Fasig-Tipton sold a total of 143 of the 179 yearlings on offer for a total of $66,955,000, an average of $468,217.

The average for the three heavy hitters among sires were $1,071,875 for eight Curlins, $704,375 for eight Gun Runners and $680,455 for 11 yearlings by Into Mischief.

Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown winner, also performed well, as eight of his yearlings sold for an average of over $515,000, including a chestnut colt that went for $1.1 million on Monday.
