After losing their first pool play game Saturday at the AABC Northeast World Series, the Albany Athletics bounced back in their must-win second game to pick up a win that sent them into Sunday’s championship round.

Albany started its day falling 3-2 to the Terryville Black Sox at Fuessenich Park in Torrington, Connecticut, to drop to 1-1 in the pool play round, but Tommy Kretzler tossed a four-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over the Milford Hunters at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, Connecticut, to allow Albany to advance.

The Athletics will face Terryville for the championship on Sunday at Municipal Stadium. If Albany wins the first game at 11 a.m., the teams will meet at 2 p.m. in a winner-take-all championship game.

Against Terryville on Saturday, the Black Sox plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead after Albany had gone on top thanks to a Nick Hansen RBI double and a Mark Powell RBI bunt single. All three runs A’s starter Joe Pokrentowski allowed were unearned.

However, Kretzler’s 82-pitch, nine-strikeout shutout against Milford kept Albany’s season going. The A’s scored both of their runs in the first inning via a Mike Talavera RBI double and a Nate Novak sacrifice fly.
