CLIFTON PARK – A Clifton Park man has been arrested in connection with Thursday’s fatal hit-and-run crash along Vischer Ferry Road, Saratoga County Sheriff’s officials said.

Lawrence C. Dippold, 77, of Clifton Park, was arrested and charged with one count of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, a felony.

He is accused of striking and killing Clifton Park resident Michele Heffern, 64, as she walked along the road at around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, and then he is accused of fleeing the scene, officials said.

Sheriff’s officials had asked for the public’s help in identifying the driver and truck. Sheriff Michael Zurlo in a statement thanked all those who helped lead to the arrest.

While officials did not immediately describe what led to the arrest, Zurlo cited help from the public and video evidence. Investigators were able to identify Dippold by the end of Thursday, officials said.

“I would like to thank everyone from the first responding officers, our Criminal Investigations Unit and Accident Reconstruction Unit for their hard work for bringing this case to a close so swiftly for the family of Mrs. Heffern,” Zurlo said. “Additionally, I would like to thank members of the public, businesses in the area and to the staff of the Town of Clifton Park for their cooperation for providing video evidence that was of great value in the investigation.”

Heffern, also identified as Michele Cook-Heffern, had been a member of the Vischer Ferry Volunteer Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary, according to a post on the company’s Facebook page.

The company members and auxiliary “mourn the sudden & tragic loss of Auxiliary Member Michele Cook-Heffern who was taken from us way too soon,” the post read. “Heaven has gained another angel … her light will continue to shine and warm the hearts of her family and all those that knew her now and into the future.”
