Sports briefs: Siena scores second straight win on Italy trip

Graduate student Michael Bear scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter and added 14 rebounds and five assists to help the Siena men’s basketball team win its second straight game on its summer trip to Italy, beating Pallanestro Crema 69-65 on Friday in Crema, Italy.

Jayce Johnson scored a team-high 15 points for Siena, finishing 8 for 9 from the free throw line, including a pair with 7.5 seconds left that sealed the win. Jackson Stormo added 13 points and Jared Billups scored 11 as four Saints finished in double figures.

Siena rallied from an eight-point first half deficit and took the lead for good on a putback with 4:15 left in the fourth quarter.

The Saints wrap up their Italian tour Saturday with a matchup against UCC Assigeco Piacenza.


COBLESKILL — The SUNY Cobleskill women’s golf team has been accepted as a member to the Northeast Women’s Golf Conference for the 2022-23 season. The conference was formed in the spring of 2019 and is recognized as a single-sport NCAA Division III conference with an automatic NCAA championship bid.  

League members include Husson, Johnson & Wales, Keuka, Manhattanville, Nazareth, Suffolk, SUNY Canton, SUNY Cortland, St. John Fisher, Westfied State University and Utica.  

The Fighting Tigers will open the 2022 season on Sept. 3 when they host the 2022 Fighting Tiger Fall Invitational at the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club beginning at 11 a.m.


COBLESKILL — The SUNY Cobleskill Athletic Department announced recently that current Fighting Tiger pitching coach Austin Straub has been named the team’s interim head baseball coach for the 2022-23 academic year. Straub succeeds Lance Ratchford, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Marist after leading Cobleskill to back-to-back North Atlantic Conference Western Division titles in 2021 and 2022 while compiling a 60-56 overall record in his four seasons directing the program.

In his three seasons as the team’s pitching coach, Straub guided the staff to a 44-34 overall record with a 6.14 earned in 587 innings of work as Cobleskill pitchers struck out 398 batters on their way to back-to-back NAC divisional championships. Under his direction, a pair of Fighting Tiger hurlers earned All-NAC Team honors as Jarrod Williams earned Second Team All-NAC honors in 2021 and Wyatt Palmer earned All-NAC First Team acclaim and NAC Pitcher of the Year honors in 2022.
