ROTTERDAM — After months of anticipation, the ALDI supermarket that sits at the Five Corners intersection is set to open Thursday.
The new location at 3075 Broadway in Rotterdam will replace the German-based supermarket chain’s State Street location in Schenectady, which closed on Wednesday.
Aaron Sumida, a regional vice president for ALDI, said the new location will provide shoppers with a greater experience while maintaining the affordable prices the company is known for.
“We are always looking out for the needs of our shoppers and decided to move our Schenectady store to allow more room for added fresh, high-quality products at affordable prices, which our loyal shoppers know and love,” he said in a statement.
The 20,000-square-foot supermarket, constructed by Gordon Development of Albany at a cost of $5 million, was built on two vacant parcels that previously held a CVS pharmacy and the Taylor & Vadney sporting Goods shop.
“The Five Corners site in Rotterdam has been transformed from two vacant boarded up buildings to a new $5 million Aldi Store that will serve the residents of Rotterdam and Schenectady,” Anthony Jasenski, chair of the Schenectady County Legislature, said in a statement. “This smart growth project was coordinated by the County’s unified economic development team in partnership with Gordon Development and the town of Rotterdam.”
ALDI operates 2,200 stores across 38 states, and has been ranked No. 1 for price according to the Dunnhumby Retailer Preference Index Report for five years running.
To celebrate the Rotterdam location’s opening, the first 100 customers will receive a gift bag filled with a sampling of ALDI products. Shoppers can also enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $500 ALDI gift card.
The Rotterdam store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
