IN THE POCKET – More than 70 local, regional and even national elite bowlers will storm the lanes this weekend for the Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center RPI Open PBA regional in South Glens Falls.
The event will serve as a qualifier for the annual Regional Pro Invitational Jan. 2-5 in Las Vegas.
Friday’s practice session is from 3-5 p.m. On Saturday, the eight-game qualifier begins at 10 a.m., with a third of the field advancing to roll four more game Sunday morning. The top `16 will bowl three additional games, with the top 8 after 15 games advancing to roll two additional games. The top four then advance to the stepladder finals. First place is projected to pay $2,500, and the final cash spot is projected to pay a minimum of $450.
Towne Bowling Academy’s Action Bowling Supply pro shop operator Matt Fazzone, 30, is among an extremely strong local contingent.
“This is the best of the best. They execute way better than everyone else,” said the standout left-hander. “I’d like to make the cut and try to give it a run for the title on Sunday. That’s all I’m trying to do. My goal is always to make one good shot at a time.”
Knowing your equipment at this level is extremely important, and that gives Fazzone an edge. He drills not only his own equipment but also fits bowling balls for many other area stars.
“I definitely know my equipment and what to use — especially up there. We bowl up at Kingpin’s Alley quite a bit for tournaments, and I’ve bowled on every lane for the last 6-7 years while competing in the annual New Year’s Day tournament,” he said.
Fazzone has piled up quite a few trophies in recent years. He’s a two-time champion in New England Bowling Association events and also won a NYS Masters title to go along with a Huck Finn victory, a triumph in the Towne Bowling Academy Team Handicap Tournament, a Turnpike Open win and the Drexel Memorial Doubles crown with partner Kenny Livengood.
Late entrant Brian LeClair, 57, the Revolutions Pro Shop operator at both Boulevard Bowl and Del Lanes, is one of the top bowlers in Capital Region history. The former PBA50 Player of the Year owns five PBA50 titles, 14 PBA regional titles and was the PBA East Region Player of the Year twice. LeClair finished second twice on the regular PBA Tour, is a member of both the Columbia-Greene Bowling Association and Albany Bowling Association Hall of Fame and has rolled 70 perfect games and 20 800 triples.
Ballston Spa’s RJ Martinez, who dabbled on the pro tour a few years ago, is also among the top locals in the field, along with powerful two-handers Billy McGaffin Jr. of Amsterdam and Zachary Bogholtz of Nassau.
Other local regional bowlers include Rick Bogholtz of Halfmoon, Matt Blair of Queensbury, Brandon Boyer of Hudson Falls, Frank Cataldo of Fort Edward, Saratoga Springs High School grad Hunter Chandler of Porter Corners, Tom Egan of Schenectady, Donald Guest of Middleburgh, Kyle Haines of Altamont, Michael Lapointe Jr. of Hudson Falls, Adam Pelc of Clifton Park, Anthony Scaccia of Voorheesville, Robert Skiffington Jr. of Warrensburg, Gene Speenburgh of Catskill, Eric Stangle of Ballston Spa, Roy Vanderbogart of Gansevoort and Tom Yadanza of Saratoga Springs.
Perhaps the best pedigree in the field, however, belongs to 40-year-old PBA Tour standout Bill “The Real Deal” O’Neill of Langhorne, Pennsylvania. O’Neill has 13 PBA Tour titles, including two majors, and 10 PBA regional victories.
PBA50 Tour standout Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, well known to Capital Region bowling fans for his five PBA Tour victories, including the PBA Empire State Open held here, 30 PBA regional wins and four PBA50 regional triumphs, is another competitor who makes his living on the lanes. Former Donato Scratch Singles champions Alex Cavagnaro of Massapequa and Phil Drumm of Binghamton pace a bunch of regional pros that also includes the likes of Ryan Galli of Johnson City, Zach Gentile of Modena, Brian Hall of Macedon, Anthony Neuer of Lewisburg and PBA East Region point leader Cody Shoemaker of Hanover, Pennsylvania, just to name a few.
VITALO CLASSIC FOLDS
It’s sad to hear that one of the Capital Region’s oldest and most prestigious leagues — the Vitalo Classic held Saturday nights at Sportsman’s Bowl, has folded because of a lack of bowlers.
Current secretary and Schenectady USBC Hall of Fame member Mark Ray informed me recently that despite a strong publicity push, the league had only four solid teams ready for the season opener.
Former longtime secretary Davey Mennillo, also a Schenectady USBC Hall of Famer, was devastated to hear the news, especially since he ran the league so diligently for many decades.
“So sad, after 72 years to see the Vitalo Classic come to an end,” he said. “It was the greatest league in the Capital District thanks to the tireless effort by originator Steve Vitalo. He loved the league, the talented bowlers that participated [many of them members of the SBA HOF] and the specialty of the year-end banquet. To succeed him as secretary/treasurer was an honor because he picked me to take over, and if I declined he would have continued. [But] I knew he had grown tired of the positions, so there was no way I could say no. No one could become the next Steve Vitalo. I only hope that I ran the league in a manner that would have made him proud.
“Over my years in bowling, I was able to achieve many special accomplishments, but nothing can top sitting at the head table at the year-end banquet being honored as a Vitalo league season champion.”
