CLIFTON PARK – The U.S. Department of Education recognized three local schools as 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools, out of the 297 schools nationally which earned the recognition.

The Department of Education announced the 20 schools named Blue Ribbon Schools in New York on Friday. The three local schools were: Chango Elementary School in Shenendehowa Central School District, Lake Avenue Elementary School in Saratoga Springs City School District and Elsmere Elementary School in Bethlehem Central School District.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes public and private schools in two categories. Exemplary High-Performing Schools, are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or national tests. Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools, are among their states highest preforming in closing achievement gaps.

Chango Elementary School was selected as an Exemplary High Performing School.

“We are truly honored and excited to be recognized as a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School,” Chango Principal Michelle Rawson said in a statement. “I am so proud of our students, staff and the greater Chango community for earning this national award. This is a reflection of the true sense of family and teamwork that we have here at Chango and the education we provide to all students.”

Chango is the third school in the Shenendehowa CSD to be named a National Blue Ribbon School. Gowana Junior High School earned the recognition in 1989, while Tesago was honored in 2013.

“The district is extremely proud of Chango Elementary School,” Shenendehowa Superintendent Dr. L. Oliver Robinson said in a statement. “Through the contributions of all teachers, staff, PTA, parents within the Chango family, and the leadership of former Principal Karin Skarka and current Principal Michelle Rawson, the school excels at offering a positive learning environment for all children to thrive and flourish.”

Lake Avenue Elementary School was also selected as an Exemplary High-Performing School. Exemplary High Preforming Schools have their states highest graduation rates and the highest achieving students, the top 15% in English and mathematics as measured by state assessments, according to the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program website.

Lake Avenue Elementary School previously won a National Blue Ribbon School award in 2012.

“I applaud all the honorees for the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for creating vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school communities where students can learn, grow, reach their potential, and achieve their dreams,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in a statement. “As our country continues to recover from the pandemic, we know that our future will only be as strong as the education we provide to all of our children.”
