IN THE POCKET – Local bowlers made a solid showing at last weekend’s RPI Open PBA regional at Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center in South Glens Falls.
Although the 76-player field was loaded with PBA members, including many of the top PBA East Region leaders, the Capital Region “amateur” contingent included four cashers. Former PBA member RJ Martinez of Ballston Spa led the way for the area keglers by finishing 12th. He averaged 210.27 for 15 games and earned $640.
Two-hander Billy McGaffin Jr. of Amsterdam was 18th. He picked up $540 while averaging 205.75 for 12 games. Rounding out the cashers were two-hander Zachary Bogholtz of Nassau in 24th (193.50 average for 12 games, $505) and lefty Matt Fazzone (190.42 for 12 games, $500) of Rotterdam, who operates the Action Bowling Supply pro shop at Towne Bowling Academy.
Other area bowlers who finished among the top 50 were Brandon Boyer of Hudson Falls (33rd, 197.63), Donald Guest of Middleburgh (36th 196.38), former PBA50 Player of the Year and Revolutions Pro Shop owner Brian LeClair of Albany (37th, 196.25, $275), Roy Vanderbogart of Gansevoort (38th, 195.63), Rick Bogholtz of Halfmoon (43rd, 192.13), Anthony Scaccia of Voorheesville (45th, 190.63) and Eric Stangle of Ballston Spa (48th, 190.00).
The grueling format included eight games of qualifying last Saturday, with the top 25 advancing to Sunday. After four more games Sunday morning, the field was whittled down to 16. Those bowlers rolled three more games to reach the round of 8. Two more games were contested to earn a spot in the four-player stepladder finals, which included top-seeded Jake Rollins of Glen Rock, New Jersey, PBA East Region point leader Cody Shoemaker of Hanover, Pennsylvania, 13-time PBA Tour champion Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pennsylvania., and lefty Anthony Neuer of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
Neuer thumped Shoemaker 266-219 and then used a great break in the 10th frame when a 10-pin fell late to help him slip past O’Neill 193-190.
That left Rollins and Neuer in the championship game. Rollins crushed his good friend 225-145. He stayed clean and rolled six strikes. Neuer struggled with four opens, including two splits and a washout.
Rollins, who was on the PBA Tour for a couple of seasons, secured his first PBA regional title in his first regional tournament of the year. By winning the RPI Open, he earned a spot in the Regional Players Invitational in January but he still must bowl in a few more PBA East Region events to be eligible.
“I’ve reached the match play of some tournaments before, but this is my first win,” said Rollins. “I was on the tour for three years, but COVID kind of put a stop to that, and I went on a new career path. I still bowl quite a bit though. I finished 24h in the 2020 U.S. Open. This feels awesome to finally win.”
Also earning spots in the Regional Players Invitational in January were Neuer, Shoemaker and Ryan Galli.

TALENTED FIELD
I really enjoyed watching all the talented bowlers in the regional. Although the Capital Region has more than its share of outstanding bowlers, the mix of power and accuracy from the guys at this level was a pleasure to watch.
Along with the many local bowlers competing, it was also fun to catch up with PBA50 standout Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, who has five PBA Tour victories, including the Empire State Open, to go along with 30 PBA regional wins and 4 PBA50 regional triumphs. Shafer, the only PBA50 player to make the cut, earned $630.
Other familiar names included former Donato Scratch Singles champions Alex Cavagnaro and Phil Drumm, and Galli, another of the best point producers in the East Region.
The next event on the PBA East Region Tour will be the PBA50 Timber Lanes Open Oct. 28-30 in Oxford, Pennsylvania.
By the way, KPA proprietor Doug Bohannon put on another great tournament for the elite field. It’s not surprising since he’s hosted two PWBA events, including the U.S. Women’s Open, as well.
PBA East Region manager Russ Mills was also extremely helpful and efficient, as usual. Mills, who was the guest speaker at the Schenectady USBC Hall of Fame and Awards banquet a few years ago, has been the East Region manager for 25 years. He was quite the player back in the day. He won a PBA South Region title and had success in the Capital Region as well, winning four Northern Bowlers Association crowns — two at the now defunct Action Lanes, one at Sportsman’s Bowl and another at Town & Country Lanes. Mills really knows how to run a tournament and he’s well respected on tour.
STRIKES & SPARES
Zachary Bogholtz wasn’t satisfied with simply making his first cut and cashing in the RPI Open PBA regional Sunday. He drove back to the Capital Region and competed in the King of the Hill tournament at Del Lanes. He squeezed into the stepladder as the fourth seed, but then shot a 300 game, a 233 and a 277 to beat top-seeded Matthew Flowers, who rolled a 279-815 in qualifying, for the championship.
