Union women’s hockey can’t overcome rough first period, falls to New Hampshire

UNION COLLEGE The Union women’s hockey team struggled to get going in the first period against New Hampshire on Saturday.

The Wildcats scored four goals in the opening period and went on to a 5-2 non-conference victory over the Dutchwomen at Whittermore Center in Durham, New Hampshire.

The teams split the season-opening weekend series. Union won Friday’s game 3-2.

New Hampshire struck quickly to take a 2-0 lead. Emily Rickwood gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead 62 seconds into the game. Shea Verrier made it 2-0 1:07 later.

The Wildcats made it 4-0 with two goals 22 seconds apart late in the period. Tamara Thierus scored with 4:56 to go, followed by Chavonne Truter with 4:34 left.

Union first-year forward Riley Walsh, who scored twice in Friday’s game, got the Dutchwomen’s first goal of Saturday’s contest with 2:33 remaining in the first.

Paige Greco pulled Union to within 4-2 4:10 into the second period.

Union dominated the third period, outshooting New Hampshire 15-2. But Wildcats goalie Nicky Harnett stopped all the shots.

Verrier sealed the win with an empty-net goal late in the third.

Union continues its eight-game road trip next weekend with a two-game series at Holy Cross starting Friday.
