Sports briefs: UAlbany QB Poffenbarger honored again by Colonial Athletic Association

ALBANY UAlbany quarterback Reese Poffenbarger was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the second straight week.

Poffenbarger helped lead the Great Danes to their first win of the season on Saturday against Central Connecticut State. He completed 18 of 26 pass attempts for 257 yards and two touchdown passes. It was the third consecutive game in which he surpassed the 250-yard mark, having thrown for 264 yards against New Hampshire and a program single-game record 412 yards against Fordham. 

DANES MEN’S SOCCER’S FINN RECOGNIZED

UAlbany men’s soccer Jackson Finn was named America East Rookie of the Week.

Finn scored his first career goal as a Great Dane in the team’s conference at UMBC. Finn collected a rebound and scored on an open net after back-to-back shots from Saad Faiz and Domenic Baumann drew Retriever goalkeeper Quantrell Jones out of position.  Finn’s goal secured the 1-0 victory over UMBC.

TWO UALBANY WOMEN’S SOCCER PLAYERS WIN AWARDS

Two UAlbany women’s soccer players won weekly America East awards.

Goalie Megan Hart was named Defensive Player of the Week. Hart, a Mohonasen High School graduate, made five saves and recorded her first career shutout in a 1-0 victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday.

Forward Emily Jozak was named Rookie of the Week for the third time in four weeks. She scored the game-winning goal against UMass Lowell.

PAVANO WINS ANOTHER LIBERTY LEAGUE AWARD

Union College field hockey player Alyssa Pavano won her second Liberty League Rookie of the Week Award.

Pavano scored twice in last Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime victory over Hartwick. She scored in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to tie the score 3-3, and then tallied the game-winner 44 seconds into OT to give the Dutchwomen their sixth straight win.

RPI FOOTBALL’S NOYES REPEATS

RPI senior linebacker Conner Noyes was named Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week for the second straight week.

In the Engineers’ 3-0 loss to St. John Fisher on Saturday, Noyes led all players in tackles with 13, including six unassisted and 3.5 for lost yards (10).

EMPIRE 8 HONORS SAGE’S IBA SY

Russell Sage College men’s soccer forward El Hadji Iba Sy was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week.

Iba Sy scored three goals, including two game-winners.
