Faced with future, where will we stand

Watching with alarm the deteriorating state of the union over the last five years, and fearing for the future of the republic with coming elections of 2022 and 2024, I recently recalled the words of an old hymn:
“Once to every man and nation Comes the moment to decide, /In the strife of truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side; /Some great cause, some great decision, Offering each the bloom or blight, /And the choice goes by forever ‘Twixt the darkness and the light.”
This hymn is based on “The Present Crisis,” a poem written by James Russell Lowell in 1845 as the country confronted the moral challenge of the annexation of Texas and a looming war with Mexico, both to expand the territory open to slavery.
In the hymn, written in 1890, Thomas J. Williams selected lines from the poem and edited them to fit the meter of the hymn, leaving verse five largely unaltered as the first stanza of the hymn quoted above.
As we face our own personal and collective moments to decide ‘twixt truth and falsehood, we can only hope that Lowell’s bleak image of “Truth forever on the scaffold, Wrong forever on the throne,” can be overturned, by God’s will as Lowell believed, or by our own ability to identify the truth and having seen it, lest “the choice goes by forever” to accept our “moment to decide.”

U.S. must increase its help for Ukraine

Ukraine is fighting a battle for us all. The Russian state has become an embodiment of evil.
The Russian people are not to blame, but their leaders must be stopped.
President Biden must continue and increase U.S. support. His leadership has been strong, but still more can be done.
Ukraine must be sent more equipment and funds, including long-range ATACMs missiles.
And American voters must support Biden’s leadership.

Liz Joy will reflect values of district

Every clear-thinking voter in the 20th Congressional district, be prepared to cast your vote in November as a rebuke of Paul Tonko. He has silently supported the Pelosi/Biden agenda, supporting the border crisis, runaway inflation, eliminating energy independence, supply shortages and increased criminal activity across the nation.
Retirement savings and home equity values are dropping. We need a voice in Congress that can push back against these reckless policies. Vote for Liz Joy. Our representative in Washington should reflect the values of the district, not the values of the administration.

Display a tribute to family, performers

There is a new window display in Proctors arcade that is dedicated to my great-uncles, John and Dom Pompilio, John’s wife, Mae, her parents and others that performed at Proctors back in Vaudeville.
My mother bequeathed publicity pictures of her uncles and the others that I donated to Proctors. My heartfelt thanks go to Marilyn Sassi, who went over each picture and took notes on the stories my mother relayed to me, along with the assistance of Pamela Dobbs, John Scherer, Jennie Quirk and Ed Grinter for the creative work and labor that made this happen.
It is a wonderful tribute to my great-uncles and the others who performed in the beautiful Proctors theater.
