IN THE POCKET – Longtime Albany USBC bowler Suzie Morine is making an immediate impact now that she’s also competing in one of the Schenectady USBC’s top leagues.
Morine, the talented 37-year-old daughter of Capital Region senior regional standout Bill Neumann — the Section II bowling co-coordinator and veteran coach at Columbia High School — is now bowling for the high-powered DeCrescente Distributing team in the City League Monday nights at Towne Bowling Academy. She’s off to a fantastic start, averaging 237 through the first four weeks. She fired a career-high 824 triple a couple of weeks ago.
Morine is on the same team with PWBA star Liz Kuhlkin, her father, Mark Kuhlkin, and Brian Mariano.
“I’m having a good start to the season,” said Morine, who lives in East Greenbush with her husband, Brandon, and her two young girls, 5-year-old Hailey Grace and 8-month-old Rylee.
“I’m always pretty busy, but bowling has always been very important to me and my family,” said Morine, who along with her family responsibilities is also a dialysis nurse.
“I bowled at the USBC Nationals with Jess [Aiezza] and Liz [Kuhlkin], and they said they were going to have an open spot on their league team this year, so I took the opportunity,” she said. “Now that my 5-year-old is starting kindergarten, I have a little more time to bowl. After I had my second daughter last year, I put in a lot of work into my game when I was on maternity leave.”
Morine learned the game from her father, a highly respected coach who has won numerous titles at Columbia High School. “My dad taught me how to bowl, and I’ve worked with him for a long time. He’s an amazing coach. But like any child, I didn’t want to listen to him when I was younger. Recently, I began working with Brian LeClair. It’s easier to listen to someone who is not your parent, but to this day, I still get pointers from my dad. Sometimes, he’ll come to a lesson I’m having with Brian so he can help me implement what Brian told me when he’s not there.”
She had an outstanding scholastic career at Columbia. The Blue Devils won a NYSPHSAA championship her freshman year. She then made the state team as an individual all-star her next two seasons and finished up her career with Columbia finishing second in the states.
The author of nine perfect games and six 800 triples, Morine has a high four-game series of 1,019 and a best average of 229. She won an open title in the now defunct Huck Finn Capital Region Bowling Show and is also a NYS singles’ champion.

But her ultimate career achievement on the lanes was back-to-back USBC National titles. She won the team event with Kuhlkin, Aiezza and Robin Orlikowski two years ago before teaming up with Orlikowski once again last season to win the doubles crown.
“Being a two-time USBC national champion is still kind of surreal to me,” Morine said. “I’ve been wanting to bowl in the nationals for so long. The first time I was scheduled to go there with Liz and Jess, the tournament got canceled because of COVID. So then we went the next year, and winning the team tournament was just amazing. To go back and get the doubles title the next year was great. I remember telling my husband when I went for the first time that my goal was not to let my teammates down and embarrass myself. I still can’t believe that I’ve gone to nationals twice and now have two championships.”
Morine also put in a solid performance bowling with the pros during last summer’s U.S. Women’s Open at Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center, so it’s obvious that she’s not intimidated by bowling with the best.
“For a long time, I bowled for fun, but I didn’t take it that seriously,” she said. “But now, I take it very seriously. I hope over time that I can continue to find enough time and opportunity to bowl in more tournaments and remain competitive.”
Morine recently joined the Storm/Roto Grip equipment staff, and she continues to work hard on her game.
“The thing I work on the most is my timing,” she explained. “It’s so easy for my timing to go off the rails — especially when I was coming back from bowling with a big belly because of my pregnancies. It was very easy for me to get off-balance. But then I go back to my footwork basics and make sure the ball and my feet are moving at the same time.”
Just last week at Del Lanes, the Neumann family displayed its tremendous depth of talent. Suzie’s mother rolled a career-best 614, while her dad shot a 732, she rolled a 725 and her brothers, Tim and Mike, fired a 710 and 665, respectively.
“My dad has bowled in that league at Del ever since I was little, so it’s kind of special and a lot of fun for all of us to be bowling together over there,” she said. “Fridays are for fun. Monday nights are a little more competitive.”
