UNION COLLEGE – Union College men’s hockey goalie Connor Murphy’s consecutive streak of starts is in jeopardy.

Murphy, making his 61st consecutive start, left Friday’s game against 20th-ranked UConn with an injury early in the third period of the Dutchmen’s 4-1 non-conference loss at XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.

Union head coach Josh Hauge didn’t want to say if Murphy had suffered a middle-body injury or lower-body injury. He did say that he believes it’s not a groin issue.

“He’s being evaluated right now,” Hauge said in a postgame Zoom call after the Dutchmen fell to 1-1-1. “I don’t think it’s going to be anything major, but until the doctors take a look at him, we’ll kind of see [what happens].”

Hauge said Murphy, who made 22 saves, was moving in the crease when he got hurt.

“I don’t know if it was cramping, or if it was a muscle,” Hauge said.

Freshman Kyle Chauvette replaced Murphy. In his first collegiate game, Chauvette stopped all 11 shots he faced. UConn scored a third-period empty-net goal by Chase Bradley with 1:44 left in the game.

“I’m really happy for him,” Hauge said. “I thought he did a nice job. He gave us a chance of trying to get back into it.”
Hauge only took two goalies on the trip. If Murphy is unable to dress for Saturday’s 4 p.m. rematch, either Joe Sharib or Merek Pipes will drive to Hartford to back up Chauvette.

Hudson Schandor gace the Huskies (3-0) a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Nick Cpaone made it 2-0 midway through the second period.

Union freshman defenseman Nick Young scored his first collegiate goal at 12:14. But 2:33 late, Jake Percival intercepted a clearing pass by Union freshman defenseman John Prokop from behind the net and beat Murphy.
