Amsterdam Police: Girl hit by car on Forest Avenue Wednesday, suffers serious injuries

AMSTERDAM — A girl on her way to the bus stop Wednesday morning was struck by a vehicle while in a crosswalk on Forest Avenue, Amsterdam police said.

Police described her injuries as serious, but they were not believed to be life-threatening. She was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

The girl, who was not identified due to her age, was making her way across Forest Avenue from Church Street shortly after 6 a.m., according to Lt. Joseph Spencer, public information officer for city police.

The driver, Tyler J. Lampron, 26, of Gloversville, stopped at the scene and cooperated with police following the incident, police said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved and speed was not a factor, Spencer said.

Police said Lampron was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and not wearing corrective lenses.

While the incident remains under investigation, no additional charges are expected at this time

The girl reported to police that she was making her way toward a Capital District Transportation Authority bus stop to travel to school at the time of the crash.

The time of day on the still-dark morning and absence of light in the area are believed to have been contributing factors, Spencer said. Surveillance footage of the collision was obtained by police aided the investigation.

The area is not known to have a high rate of traffic accidents, according to Spencer, who noted the crosswalk and related signage were recently installed during the city’s Church Street reconstruction project.

“Those crosswalks are new,” the lieutenant said. “They are vibrant.”

Police will review signage in the area alerting motorists to the crosswalk and check for working street lights in the area to determine with city officials whether any action is needed to improve pedestrian safety around the crash site, Spencer said.
