IN THE POCKET – It won’t be long before Angelo Galofaro’s name will be recognized throughout the Capital Region bowling community.
The 14-year-old Schenectady native and Christian Brothers Academy student is quickly moving up the junior ranks with his high-powered style, and he’s picking up the mental game almost as easily as he’s conquered the physical side of the sport.
“For most people, they would consider my style kind of weird,” said Galofaro, who competes in both the Boulevard Bowl and Sportsman’s Bowl junior programs as well as the Capital District Junior Scholarship Tour, the Capital District Challenge League and as many tournaments as he can find. “I put my thumb in the ball first, and I like to crank the ball using the power elbow,. But in the past couple of months, I’ve changed my style and toned it down a little more. I’ve found more success.”
Besides his parents and the rest of his family, who have strongly supported his bowling obsession, Galofaro credits many coaches with his early success.

“The person that really got me into bowling was Sharon Sager at Boulevard Bowl, but all of the Scaccia family helped out, as well as people like Tony Bianchi,” Galofaro noted. “But along the way, I also got coaching help from Bob Tedesco, Craig Taylor, Eric Morrett and Don Herrington, as well as Mike Guidarelli, Paul Adkins, Steve Fawcett and Chris Fawcett in the Sportsman’s Bowl junior programs.”
Galofaro averages between 217 and 219 in the Boulevard Bowl junior program and between 205 and 210 at Sportsman’s Bowl. He already has a high game of 288 and a high triple of 754.
“Two of my goals are getting a 300 game and an 800 triple,” he said.
Besides his many individual accomplishments, Galofaro already has a bronze medal in team competition to his credit, as his team finished third in the prestigious USA Bowling Junior National Championships this past summer in the under-15 division.
“I knew one of the kids from Steve Fawcett’s junior program at Sportsman’s Bowl, and he invited me to bowl on that team,” Galofaro explained. “I knew the other two kids, but we weren’t close originally. But we all became really good friends. We qualified for nationals in Staten Island, and then found a lot of success in Delaware.”
Galofaro also finished fifth with Craig Taylor in the NYS Adult-Youth Championships. He’s qualified for the highly respected Junior Gold National Championships twice.
“I just love to bowl,” he said. “In a typical week during the winter, I bowl almost every day, but it’s a year-round thing for me.”
Galofaro said his favorite line to the pocket is standing on the 20th or 25th board and rolling the ball out to between the eighth and third boards.
“For me, I’d rather see a longer oil pattern, because it’s a lot easier to stay close to the head pin,” he said. “But if I have to I can bowl when it’s bone dry, as well.”
Galofaro uses all types of equipment, from Storm and Roto Grip to all seven companies under the Brunswick umbrella. But his benchmark ball is the Emerald IQ from Storm. He uses a Storm Mix as his spare ball.
“When I bowl in league play, I normally bring three balls with me, but for tournaments, I usually bring six,” Galofaro said. “I’m pretty diverse when it comes to all of my choices of brands.”
When his game gets a little out of sync, it’s usually his timing that’s the problem.
“I work a lot on the consistency of my swing and my release point,” he said. “I usually roll the ball about 16.5 mph for my normal speed.”
Galofaro spends most of his spare time rolling a bowling ball, of course, but he’s hoping to add baseball as another hobby next spring.
“When I was younger, before COVID, I played all positions except pitcher and catcher, and I hope to play baseball again,” he said.
Galofaro said he loves CBA and credits that school for making him a much better all-around student-athlete.
“I like everything about it,” he said. “It has the best academics around and the best people going to it. CBA has really changed me over the last couple of years. My school average is about a 90, but I’ve got a 95 in my favorite subject, which is math.”
Sager, a Schenectady USBC Hall of Famer and his first coach, recognized Galofaro’s talents immediately.
“He has always aspired to be a great bowler. He was very talented even when he first started,” Sager recalled. “He is a great kid that has worked extremely hard on his game and had very early success. He was like a sponge. He listened to what I say is the most important lesson — never say I can’t.
“As a young and successful bowler, he takes the time to enjoy the journey and appreciate it. He’s always been extremely competitive. One time, we were bowling in a summer adult-junior league together. At the start of the season, he said he was going to beat me. I said we are teammates, and no, you won’t beat me. Well, he didn’t beat me at the time, but I would say now I wouldn’t stand a chance. I am very proud of his accomplishments and know that he will be very successful.”
