The Union men’s hockey team got a much-needed win Saturday, but it was a strange victory.

An apparent late third-period goal by Liam Robertson was overturned on video review, which led to Robertson’s ejection from the game against Yale. The game went to a shootout, and Tyler Watkins scored in the fourth round to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 ECAC Hockey victory over the Bulldogs at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Connecticut.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak.

Robertson had taken a John Prokop pass and lofted a backhander over Yale goalie Luke Pearson to apparently snap a scoreless tie with 3:34 left in the game. However, Yale coach Keith Allain wanted a video review.

Because ECACH referees don’t wear microphones, no one knew what Allain was challenging. The Yale announcers on ESPN+ were speculating either goalie interference or an offsides.

But no one expected that, when referees Tom Dellafranco and Anthony Dapuzzo were done watching the video, not only was the goal being waved off, but Robertson was given a five-minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct. The kneeing in question happened 17 seconds earlier.

The Dutchmen killed off the major power play that carried into overtime.

“I haven’t watched the video yet, so I have no idea if it was the right call or not,” Union head coach Josh Hauge said. “I just know our guys persevered, and [it was a] gutsy effort to finish that out.”

Union missed its first three chances in the shootout. Two were bad luck because Nate Hanley and Chris Theodore each hit posts.

Watkins’ shot also hit the post. But the puck hit the back of Pearson’s skate and trickled into the net.

Union’s victory came a day after it was blown out by Brown 6-2. Hauge gave freshman Kyle Chauvette the start in goal over senior Connor Murphy. Chauvette, making his first ECACH start, made 30 saves and four more in the shootout.

“Kyle has been consistent when he’s played,” Hauge said. “He’s been lights out for us. “I’m really happy with this play.”
