IN THE POCKET – A car accident forced former special education teacher Kristen Zadrozny to switch from being a right-hander to a left-hander on the lanes. But more importantly, it also opened the door to a surprising new career.
The Mohonasen High School and College of Saint Rose product could no longer teach autistic children after the accident, and although she never took the game too seriously, she eventually began working as a part-time front desk person at Towne Bowling Academy. It didn’t take long to realize that the Rotterdam native’s many communication skills as a teacher made her perfect for her new job. Now she’s helping to run leagues and tournaments six days a week.
“I didn’t know it would be this involved. It kind of snuck up on me,” said Zadrozny, who estimates that she’s been at Towne Bowling Academy for roughly 15 years. Throw in another 17 years as a member of the Schenectady USBC board of directors, and it’s easy to see why she’s so valuable as an administrator and jack-of-all-trades behind the scenes.
“I used to make a donation when I bowled every Friday night [in the Alley Kats league],” Zadrozny said with a chuckle. “Ron [her husband] and Ronnie [her son] were bowling in leagues and after my accident I was always there at the lanes watching them. Marty [proprietor Marty Capullo Jr.] jokingly said one night why not help out once in a while as long as I was already there.
“At first, it was something just to get me out of the house a little and feel useful again after the accident and not being able to work. Then, I think it just kind of evolved. He needed more help at the lanes, and I figured I could work this night or the next night. It just kind of happened,” she explained.
Zadrozny quickly fell in love with her new job.
“You get to meet so many different people, and a lot of them became like a second family,” she said. “During COVID, we were there at the lanes all together so much that we used to have family dinners right there on the lanes on Sundays. We would cook and have Marty, Debbie and Jayson [the Capullo family] sit down with us for dinner.”
Zadrozny is a noted cook, and it works out well for her family. “I like to cook, and they love to eat,” she said. “Now, I cook the meals earlier in the day so they can eat when they get home because I’m usually at the lanes every night.”
Zadrozny’s job description has increased over the years.
“I take care of all the paperwork for the leagues. I import them and export them and get the scores to the paper. I pretty much do everything the secretaries need me to do,” she said. “I open the center on weekends and close during the week. When the Handicap Team Tournament began 13 years ago, it became another huge part of my job. I pretty much learned as I went in terms of what I had to do at the center. Over the years, I’ve become pretty good at using the computer. It’s easier for me to do something computer-related at the lanes than try to teach someone else to do it.”
Zadrozny has also been an invaluable member of the Schenectady USBC board of directors, teaming up with fellow board member Sharon Sager to run the association’s women’s doubles tournament and also helping to run the junior programs.
“I do all the junior sanctions and stuff like that,” she said. “Looking at my board responsibilities from the juniors’ aspect, I love getting more kids involved. When they graduate from the junior program and come back from school or bowl in adult leagues, that’s the biggest kick for me.”
Zadrozny also helps out running the tournament scoring program, and she’s not afraid of speaking up at board meetings.
“No, I’m not afraid of voicing my opinion,” she said. “Sometimes, it gets me in trouble.”
Zadrozny was introduced to the game by her husband. “He taught me how to bowl when we were first dating, and he bought me my first ball and shoes for Christmas back in high school,” she recalled.
The Zadroznys bowled as a couple in the Happy Foursomes league while she was in college, and after taking a break from bowling when she had her children — Ronnie and Julia — she picked up league bowling in the Alley Kats league.
“The great thing about bowling is that you don’t have to be a 230-plus average bowler to enjoy the game. And you can do it with your family and your kids,” she said.
Her best game is a 224 — when she beat her husband — and her best triple is a 612. “It wasn’t easy becoming a left-hander after all those years, but at least I could still bowl,” she said.
Zadrozny’s multiple skills and willingness to help out on all ends of the business is not overlooked by Marty Capullo.
“Towne Bowling Academy has always been and will always be a family business, and everyone on our team truly brings this to light upon entering our front door,” Capullo said. “Kristen is a super woman — everything from managing the front desk, organizing, birthday parties, assisting with tournaments, jumping in behind the bar. Whatever it takes, she does a fantastic job. We love you Kristen.”
Schenectady USBC president Bill Nolan also appreciates Zadrozny’s many contributions.
“Kristen has been a valuable resource for a long time, not only with the board, but also working with the junior programs on Friday and Saturday at Towne,” Nolan said. “She is a board rep at Towne, taking care of questions concerning leagues and handling any adult paperwork that needs to be forwarded to the office. Along with the adult leagues, she also handles all the association junior league sanctions and an honor score paperwork that needs to be forwarded to USBC.
“She will also be a contact point for the league bowlers at Towne for the upcoming Open Championship. Can’t say enough as to the time and energy Kristen puts in for all the bowlers, both adult and youth, in the Schenectady association.”
