WEEKEND PLANS – There’s no shortage of things to do in the Capital Region, whether you’re looking for live music, films, theater, games or festivals.
If you’re in need of a few ideas for your weekend plans, we’ve rounded up a few of the best bets from around the area.
Here’s a look at what’s going on:
Siena clashes with Iona
The biggest home game of the Siena men’s basketball conference season comes Friday at 7 p.m. when the Saints welcome Iona and its Hall of Fame coach, Rick Pitino, to MVP Arena in Albany.
The game will determine first place in the MAAC, with Siena (7-2 MAAC, 13-7 overall) currently leading Iona (6-2, 13-6) by a half-game in the league standings. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com.
Purple Passion
Athletes from all four Section II high school gymnastics teams will compete in purple gear during Friday’s Purple Passion charity meet at the YMCA in Wilton.
Hosted by Saratoga Gymnastics, the meet raises awareness of domestic violence and supports Wellspring. The Saratoga County-based non-profit provides crisis intervention, emergency shelter, legal advocacy, housing assistance and other services to those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.
The Purple Passion meet starts at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Soup Stroll
Thousands are expected to head to Downtown Schenectady’s Soup Stroll on Saturday when more than 30 restaurants and eateries will serve up a variety of stews, chowders and soups.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., attendees can visit any of the participating eateries to try three-ounce samples for $1 each. Those who have visited a minimum of 10 restaurants can vote on their favorite dishes.
Some of the participating restaurants include Bountiful Bread, Chez Nous, Frog Alley Brewing Co., Take Two Cafe, Simone’s Kitchen and Stella Pasta Bar & Bistro. For the map of restaurants and the voting ballot, visit downtownschenectady.org.
Capital District Mayor’s Cup
The annual Capital District Mayor’s Cup doubleheader between the Union and RPI men’s and women’s hockey programs will take over Albany’s MVP Arena on Saturday.
The women’s teams, who also face each other Friday night at RPI’s Houston Field House, start Saturday’s action at 3 p.m. RPI won last year’s women’s Mayor’s Cup game 2-0.
The men’s game will follow at 6 p.m., with Union trying to maintain its hold on the Mayor’s Cup after last year’s 2-0 win. The two teams split their ECAC Hockey series back in October.
Tickets, which are good for both games, are available at unionathleticstickets.universitytickets.com.
Wine and Dine for the Arts
Top chefs from the area have come together for the Albany Chefs’ Food and Wine Festival: Wine and Dine for the Arts, which runs through Saturday.
The festival features seminars, a gala dinner and a slider slam. Set to take place at the Albany Capital Center, it’s the first time since the pandemic that the event has been held in person.
Funds raised will go toward providing sustainable funding for the not-for-profit arts community in Albany. Ticket prices vary per event. For more information, visit albanywinefest.com.
