EDINBURG — A snowmobiler from Montgomery County died of injuries suffered in a snowmobile crash late Saturday night on the Great Sacandaga Lake, Saratoga County Sheriff’s officials said.
Officials identified the snowmobiler as 20-year-old Garrett McIntosh of the town of Florida.
Authorities responded to the crash at 11:35 p.m. near Lunker Lane in Edinburg. The town’s fire department and EMS squad, as well as the Northville Fire Department, joined the Sheriff’s department on the scene.
“I can tell you in general terms that there’s a couple of people who have been snowmobiling on the ice and had fallen back a little ways,” said Sheriff’s department Captain Daniel P. Mooley. “They went back to check on him and found the snowmobile on its side,” and MacIntosh on the ice.
MacIntosh was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
The investigation remained ongoing Sunday, according to officials.
Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said officials spent all night investigating.
The department’s top official hopes the investigation will bring closure for MacIntosh’s family.
“It’s pretty sad,” Zurlo said. “My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Authorities are prohibited from barring entry into the lake area, a public access body of water — even amid hazardous conditions. Over the years, there have been a number of snowmobile crashes on the lake and drownings related to fractured ice.
“I would just tell people when you’re out on the lake at a late hour like that, just be aware of your surroundings and stuff,” Zurlo said. “You just need to just be careful.”
