IN THE POCKET – Physical talent is only half the formula for bowling success. The mental side of the game is equally important. Even the most talented keglers must be able to adjust quickly to ever-changing lane conditions.
That’s one of the reasons why SUNY Schenectady’s Eliza Arasim is knocking down pins with regularity for the Royals.
The Albany native and Albany High School graduate is currently leading the Mountain Valley Conference with a 224 average. The second-year Royals’ competitor was the all-events champion at the Hawk Invitational, where SUNY Schenectady finished third in the team standings.
SUNY Schenectady head coach Ron Williams knew Arasim was talented when she competed for five seasons at Albany High, but he also appreciates the fact that she is willing to try new things at the next level.
“She’s very smooth, and she adjusts well to the shot that’s out there,” Williams said. “She’s also very coachable and very competitive. She’s a really good leader for the team, as well. Right now, she holds the high average in our conference. This year we’ve been working on opening up her shot a little and using the oil patterns out on the lane.”
Arasim, who works part-time at both Del Lanes and East Greenbush Bowling Center when she’s not in school, has one perfect game to her credit with a high triple of 763. She learned the game in the Del Lanes junior program and then honed her skills at Albany High, where her mother was the head coach.
“I’m pretty much a down-and-in type of bowler. I started out shooting very straight,” Arasim said. “Now, I can move left and hook the ball a little more. I’ve been working with Coach Ron on trying to hook it a little more. I wasn’t too comfortable at first. I would cross my arms over my body and would mess up quite a bit. But now, I’m getting used to it.”
Another improvement Williams has helped Arasim with is getting better leverage at the release point.
“I would say that over the two years I’ve been with the program, he’s helped me stay down at the line a lot more than I used to,” she said. “I would say that my average now is the highest it’s ever been. At Albany High, we did OK. We were pretty good when I first started with the program in eighth grade, but then we fell down a little when some of the more experienced bowlers graduated. We didn’t have a feeder program. But my senior year was one of the best years in bowling.”
The Storm/Roto Grip equipment fan takes her leadership role seriously, and the two-time captain has set several goals for herself and her teammates.
“I would say that right now, as a team, I want us to stay competitive with the other teams in our conference. I’d like to see us do well at the regionals and the nationals,” she said. “As for me individually, I would like to win something at nationals. I want to keep bowling and keep improving.”
SUNY Schenectady is a co-ed program, which means Arasim competes against many more men than women during conference matches.
“My average only counts for the men’s program. We only have one women’s team in our league,” she said. “But in all honesty, I’d rather be on a co-ed team. My high school team was co-ed, and I’ve been bowling against the men my whole career. I think the men can be more competitive to bowl against, and I’m used to that.”
Arasim spends almost all of her free time at a bowling center.
“I do enjoy being in bowling centers. Now that I’m working there, as well, I’m at the bowling alley seven days a week. I really enjoy it,” she said. “I also love my home center, Boulevard Bowl. It’s very challenging to bowl there, but I like it.”
Arasim is currently averaging 211 Monday nights at Del Lanes, and she plans on continuing to bowl competitively after she graduates. She’s not exactly sure about her career off the lanes.
“I think I’d like to be a teacher, but I’m not exactly sure,” said the business administration major.
WILLIAMS ON A ROLL
Williams, assisted by Amy Janetsky-Smith, enjoys coaching the Royals, who are in second place in the MVC with a 6-2 record, but he’s also having one of his best seasons on the lanes.
“My goal this year is to average 230. I’ve been back and forth with it between 229 and 230 so far,” he said. “I’ve changed my game a lot this year. I went from swinging the lanes to going straighter. The old saying that straighter is greater is true. I’ve been getting plenty of help from Amy Janetsky and Bob Tedesco.”
Williams averages 229 in the Sportsman’s Majors on Monday nights, 226 in the Galaxy league Friday nights at Boulevard Bowl and 212 in the Capital District All Star league Thursday nights at Sportsman’s Bowl.
“My average in the All Star league is much lower. We bowl on the burn [second squad] there, and I’m learning how to adjust. It makes it challenging for me, and that’s what I like about it,” Williams explained.
Williams currently has 12 perfect games, including at least one at all three Schenectady USBC centers. He also has four 800 triples.
Bowling fans who want to watch Williams’ Royals compete can see them this weekend when SUNY Schenectady hosts the Boulevard Classic Saturday and the SUNY Schenectady Invitational on Sunday, both starting at 8 a.m. at Boulevard Bowl. Williams expects 15-16 teams to compete, including local rival Hudson Valley Community College.
