Schoharie County man faces vehicular assault count in crash that injured three, one severely, troopers say

SCHOHARIE – A Gilboa man has been charged in connection with a Sunday crash that severely injured another driver, and hurt two others, New York State Police said.

Michael J. Bernard Jr., 30, of Gilboa, was charged with one count each of second-degree vehicular assault, a felony, along with misdemeanor driving while ability impaired by drugs, police said.

The crash happened just after 4 p.m. Sunday on Route 30 in Schoharie, police said. Troopers responded there for a report of a two-car crash with severe injuries.

The driver of one of the vehicles suffered a severe injury to an arm, resulting in troopers responding by applying a tourniquet, police said.

That driver was taken to Albany Medical Center, along with two passengers – one a child. The two passengers suffered injuries described as minor.

Bernard was identified as the driver of the other vehicle. He denied being injured and was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, police said.

He was processed and released to a sober third party to appear in court later.
