IN THE POCKET – Led by Colonial Council MVP Marissa Phillips and freshman Brooke Howlan, a pair of natural athletes just as comfortable on the softball field as they are in the bowling center, the Schalmont High School girls have high expectations for this weekend’s trip to Syracuse’s Strike-N-Spare Lanes for the NYSPHSAA State Championships.
The Sabres will be shooting for the girls’ small school championship on Sunday, along with boys’ small school titlist Cohoes. Large school boys’ titlist Shenendehowa and large school girls’ champs Mohonasen compete in their respective divisions on Friday, while the boys’ and girls’ composite all-section teams bowl for titles on Saturday.
“We’re going out there trying to win,” said veteran Schalmont coach Hugo McGroty. “I know there are some teams out there who are coming back with experience, but if we get off to a good start, I think we have a chance.”
Schalmont has five freshmen on the roster along with just one senior, one junior and one sophomore.
“The biggest part of the game for us will be how we adjust to the conditions and make spares,” McGroty said. “Spares will make all the difference out there. How the lane conditions break down depends a lot on who is matching up with us out there. It could be a little confusing, but if the girls listen like they did at the sectionals, we should do OK. Three of our girls are very good at making adjustments and changing balls when they have to.”
McGroty keeps a chart on how often his bowlers find the pocket and hit the head pin. High point totals keep his players in the lineup.
Phillips carried a 196 average in scholastic competition, while the hard-throwing Howlan averaged 185, followed by freshman Teagan Reckner (181), senior Kaitlyn Rose (170), freshman Katelyn Delaney (153), freshman Samantha Gromoll (153), freshman Layla Gauvreau (122) and sophomore Alyssa Morse (102).
“Right now, we expect to win the title out there,” said the smooth-rolling Phillips. “We don’t want our younger players to get down on themselves, so Brooke and I congratulate all their good shots and tell them to shake off the bad ones and move on to the next shot. We always emphasize the positive.”
Phillips, who also pitches on the Schalmont varsity softball team, said she’s been playing softball for 11 years and bowling for eight, but she’s been on the Schalmont varsity bowling team for five of those seasons.
“I think the pitching motion helps both Brooke and I bowl well,” said Phillips, who has a high game of 256. “I would love to get my new high game at the states, but what I really want is for us to be No. 1. We are strong enough to beat everybody out there.”
Howlan thinks the Sabres can finish at least in the top five at Syracuse.
“We are a strong team that really gets along and has great chemistry,” she said. “We always cheer each other on.”
Howlan’s high game is a 265 and her high triple is a 695.
“My goal is to get my first 700 triple, and I hope it comes at the states,” she said. “As a pitcher, I had to pick up my speed recently, but when I started bowling I was already at 18 miles per hour, so I had to slow it down a little. I’m more comfortable playing inside, but I’ve been bowling since I was 4 years old. I would say my strength is not getting upset with myself if I make a mistake. The thing I would like to improve upon the most is hitting my spots more often. I miss a couple of times.”
Two-time Section II large school champion Mohonasen, coached by Meg Fountain, features a balanced but youthful lineup that includes senior Madyson Jones (202), senior Giovanna Fowler (199), freshman Arianna Quinlivan (192), freshman Kianna Macapinlac (190), freshman Brianna Matteo (175), freshman Olivia Struffolino (173) and freshman Miley Fredenburg (172). Jones has been on a hot streak lately, shooting big scores in both the Towne Bowling Academy junior program and the Joey Schmidt Capital District Junior Pro Scoring League.
Glens Falls junior Jocelyn Smith (215), Colonie senior Amy Chrzanowski (209), Columbia sophomore Cierra Gabriel (196), Middleburgh freshman Delilah Shultes (192), Scotia-Glenville sophomore Savannah Swiatocha (190) and Columbia junior Jennifer Doty (189) are members of the girls’ all-section team.
For the large school boys, Shenendehowa, coached by area standout Jessica Aiezza and former Plainsmen Connor Chatterton, are led by the 1-2 punch of junior Jeremy Shafer (211.8) and senior Frank Ferrari (204.14). Rounding out the roster are senior Jonathan Bauer (197.98), senior Joshua Taylor (194.74), junior Thomas Quinn (193.49), sophomore Jonathan Millis (193.0) and senior Jackson Breuer (180.3).
Veteran coach Pam Bertrand guides Section II small school boys champion Cohoes, which is paced by senior Elijah Gillick (208) and sophomore Andrew Gillick (204). The rest of the Tigers’ lineup consists of eighth-grader Gary Mills (197), ninth-grader Jonathan Szozda (191), sophomore Jackson Felt (177), junior Kevin Stanley (167) and ninth-grader Joshua Yando (154).
Stillwater senior Connor Julian (219) and Saratoga Springs sophomore Macallan Gagne (219) top the boys’ all-section team that also includes La Salle sophomore Zach Bombard (209), Lansingburgh senior Daniel Goldston (208), Johnstown freshman Darryn Follis (201) and Mechanicville junior Jason Walker (196), who led the sectional qualifier at Boulevard Bowl.
