Schalmont girls’ bowlers second at Division 2 state championships

HIGH SCHOOLS – The Schalmont girls’ bowling team notched a runner-up finish behind Section V’s Newark in Division 2 to wrap up competition at the NYSPHSAA bowling championships on Sunday at Strike N’ Spare Lanes in Syracuse.

Schalmont finished with 5,252 total pins for the six-game event, trailing Newark by 320. The Sabres finished 295 points clear of third-place Union Springs/Port Byron of Section IV.

Three Schalmont bowlers finished in the top-15 individually for their six-game series. Brooke Howlan was second with a 251-1,025, Marissa Phillips was sixth with a 221-962 and Teagan Reckner was 15th with a 222-855.

Howlan’s 251 and Samantha Gromoll’s 243 were the two best single games of the competition.

Section II’s Division 2 boys’ representative, Cohoes, also took second place. The Tigers finished with 6,146 pins, 183 behind champion West Seneca East of Section VI.

Ethan Gillick was Cohoes’ top bowler, with a 268-1,136, finishing second on total pins and tying for the second-best high single.
