Sports briefs: Former Siena men’s basketball player Gaines turns pro in Australia

SPORTS BRIEFS – Former Siena College men’s basketball player Anthony Gaines will begin his professional career with the Newcastle Falcons in Australia’s NBL1.

Gaines played with Siena as a graduate student during the 2021-22 season after playing four seasons with Northwestern. With Siena, he averaged 10.9 points and ranked sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in rebounding with 7.1 per game. He was named third-team All-MAAC.

He has been rehabilitating a torn ACL in his right knee. 

McCOLLUM, STORMO NAMED TO NABC DISTRICT TEAM

Siena men’s basketball players Javian McCollumn and Jackson Stormo were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches District I second team.

A third team All-MAAC selection, McCollum ranked second in the MAAC in free throw percentage (.890), third in assists (3.9) and fifth in scoring (15.9).

Stormo, a second team All-MAAC honoree, he ranked fourth in the MAAC in blocks (1.2), sixth in field goal percentage (.509) and seventh in free throw percentage (.809). He averaged 12.5 points and 5.4 rebounds in 31 games.

VALLEYCATS ANNOUNCE COACHING STAFF

Pete Incaviglia, manager of the Tri-City ValleyCats, recently announced his full coaching staff. Thomas Incaviglia will return as the third base and bench coach, while former New Jersey Jackals manager Brooks Carey will be the pitching coach.

Carey has been the Jackals’ manager the past four seasons. He captured a 2019 Can-Am League championship and became the franchise’s second-winningest manager all-time, with 182 wins.

RPI’S BLACK EARNS TWO HONORS

RPI graduate-student men’s basketball player Dom Black was named to D3hoops.com’s All-Region 3 Second Team and to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-District 3 Second Team.

An All-Liberty League First Team selection and three-time Defensive Player of the Year, Black led the Engineers in scoring (13.0 ppg), rebounding (7.0), steals (50) and assists (77).

RUSSELL SAGE’S FARAJ RECOGNIZED

Russell Sage sophomore guard Syrita Faraj, a Tamarac graduate, was named to the D3hoops.com’s All-Region First Team.

The Empire 8 Player of the Year, Faraj set the program’s single-season record in points per game with 20.2. She also had 224 rebounds, 46 assists and 50 steals.
