IN THE POCKET – PWBA standout Liz Kuhlkin is undoubtedly one of the greatest bowlers in Capital Region history, but she is facing some new challenges off the lanes. The 29-year-old Schalmont High School product is now in the process of playing a new mental game that is much more complicated than knowing when to switch balls or adjust angles to the pocket.
Although Kuhlkin has been working for Price Chopper/Market 32 for 10 years, she received a promotion from produce clerk to Zone Staffing Coordinator in October. She went from having a part-time job working 25-30 hours a week to a full-time supervisory position that carries much more responsibility. The former University of Nebraska star is adamant that she wants to continue her professional career at a high level, but she knows it won’t be easy.
“Before this promotion, I had a carefree existence. I did my work in the produce department, and then I went home at 2:30. When I left work, I left my work there,” Kuhlkin said.
“Now, it’s a little more involved. I have to deal with more issues. I have a work phone and a work computer with me. Honestly, I take my job very seriously. It’s another career for me now. I care about the job and doing well. At times over the last few months, I’ve brought my work home and was thinking about it at the lanes. That’s what you do when you care about a job. I’m working on that.”
Kuhlkin’s new position carries plenty of responsibilities.
“This is the first time in my career that I’ve had a full-time job,” Kuhlkin said. “At Price Chopper, there are eight zones, and every zone has 16 stores. I’m the coordinator for Zone 3, which means I have 16 stores where I supervise all the staffing clerks. I assist in hiring, recruiting and human resource questions. It’s a big job from the operational side. I’m used to dealing with customers all the time, but now I deal with employees all the time. It’s a big difference.”
Kuhlkin’s promotion not only means more pressure, but it has changed the way she thinks about her bowling career.
“I’ll be staying more local as far as tournaments are concerned,” she explained. “I don’t want to take the whole weekend driving. For example, I recently drove to New Jersey for a Brunswick appearance with Parker Bohn III and Johnny Petraglia. I hopped in the car on Friday after work and worked all weekend. That’s a long week. It’s been an adjustment, and it will be another adjustment when the PWBA Tour comes around in May.”
Fortunately, the Price Chopper/Market 32 administrators knew what they were getting into when they promoted Kuhlkin.
“I‘ve always wanted to move up in Price Chopper,” she said. “This was the perfect opportunity for me to move up and have more responsibility and still bowl. When I was first interviewed, they asked me why I didn’t want to become a store manager or co-manager, and I told them I couldn’t do a job like that because it involves being at the store five days a week all year long.”
Even in her new position, Kuhlkin continues to promote bowling.
“I’ve met a lot of people within Price Chopper that want to go bowling now. It’s really a cool way to spread the game that way. One of our managers even set up a bowling bonding weekend for his employees,” she said.
Apparently, Kuhlkin’s promotion hasn’t hindered her game much, at least during league season. She’s averaging 239 in the Towne Mixed Doubles league on Wednesday nights, and she has rolled three consecutive 1,000 four-game series. She’s also averaging 238 in the City League Monday nights at Towne. She recently registered her 57th career perfect game.
“The biggest thing is that I’m bowling pretty well as of late,” she said. “I have missed out on going to a couple of the big tournaments, like the Bud Bowl, but I would rather stay local, get some practice and rest than drive to Oswego, even though it’s important to bowl on more competitive tournament conditions.”
Kuhlkin, who has battled wrist pain this season, also is heavily involved in promoting the seven brands under the Brunswick bowling ball company umbrella. In order to promote the products, she has to use them.
“So far, I’ve drilled up at least 25 bowling balls this year. You can never keep up. I’m getting them drilled at Jack Fitzimmons’ place [Barbecue Recreation] in Hoosick Falls, and I love it there. But there is a lot more traveling involved, especially when I do ball reviews, which I’m doing a lot more of now. My job is to try to sell Brunswick products, and that means I’ve got to try them out and use them myself,” she explained.
Kuhlkin is still in the prime of her professional career. Her victory in last season’s PWBA Long Island Classic was her third career PWBA title and boosted her confidence after a four-year dry spell on tour. Kuhlkin, who also owns a pair of PWBA regional victories, still holds the national record for highest three-game series by a woman (890) and is a two-time USBC National High Average Award winner.
She was a member of two national championship teams at Nebraska, as well as the 2015 NTCA Division I Player of the Year and a three-time All-American.
The former Team USA member has two gold medals, two silver medals and five bronze medals in international competition.
She’s a multiple NYS Queens champion and a former Donato Scratch Singles titlist, as well.
Kuhlkin expects to be competitive once again when the PWBA Tour begins May 4-6 at the PWBA Stockton Open at Pacific Avenue Bowl.
“At the end of the day, my biggest thing is trying to be as consistent as I can be. I need consistent motion and rhythm, and I need to stay ahead of the lane transition better than I have been,” Kuhlkin said. “Obviously, I want to win again on tour, but honestly, I got the monkey off my back when I won last year. That showed that I’m still capable and the potential is still there. Yes, I do want to win again, but being in contention for Player of the Year is the ultimate goal of mine. Winning that award is the pinnacle of success on our tour. The last couple of years have been turbulent for me. I would bowl well one week, and then have some bad weeks.”
Kuhlkin was asked to evaluate her season so far.
“I would give myself a B-plus or an A-minus,” she said. “I want to stay healthy, and ultimately it’s all about balancing my life. I’ve got a full-time job now that provides financial stability and benefits. I did well in Marty’s tournament [Team Handicap Tournament at Towne Bowling Academy], and I just bowled pretty well in both the Blizzard Bowl and the City Tournament, where I cashed. I’ve bowled in a few tournaments here and there and cashed in most of them.
“It will be an adventure in May when the PWBA Tour begins again, and I’m sure it will be another transitional period for me. But at the end of the day, my bowling career is still a priority in my life.”
