Fox put its profits over viewers, truth
For those loyal Fox News viewers, I can only hope that the recently disclosed court filings showing Fox commentators promoted false narratives about the 2020 election despite their knowledge the election conspiracy stories were patently fraudulent will convince these folks that Fox is not, and has not been, a legitimate news channel.
Court filings relative to Old Dominion Voting System’s $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit are more than persuasive that Fox executives and commentators were well aware of the real facts, but feared Fox would lose viewers to Newsmax or OAN, and gobs of advertising revenue if they were to be honest news brokers.
In fact, Sean Hannity reportedly said his investments in Fox would sink drastically if the station did not continue to feed the viewers the fake news they wanted to hear.
Chief honcho Rupert Murdoch said the programming decision boiled down, not to red or blue, but green.
Where does this leave Fox?
We can only hope.

Union nickname is rooted in tradition
Why is Union pushing to change its “Dutchmen” mascot/nickname?
Their excuse is that it was dreamed up by a sportswriter and has no real connection with either the college or Schenectady.
Many of the schools Union plays on the athletic field had their names originate with local sportswriters e.g. “Bombers” of Ithaca.
As for the “Dutchmen” connection, you need look no further than much of the Dutch-inspired architecture on the campus, as well as that influence in the city of Schenectady.
Dutchmen is a totally unique moniker nationwide and immediately recognizable, so why the change?
Numerous athletic teams, such as the NCAA champion hockey team, have proudly been known as Dutchmen. The legendary Bob Ridings would dress as a Dutchman and fire a cannon after every Union score at football games. (For pure excitement, few games compare to our defeat of Williams in 1968.)
The reason for change? I can only surmise it is the fever dream of some 20-something PR intern. The current undergraduates should not have a final say in this decision without polling the athletic team alumni.
What is the alternative? Tigers? Wildcats? Dutchmen is as easily recognizable as Buckeyes, Sooners, Orange, etc. Why change? Beats the heck outta me.

Time to eliminate television drug ads
Regarding Robin Zucker’s Feb. 5 letter, (“Put an end to TV pharmaceutical sales,”), it is encouraging to read that someone agrees that our minds are being invaded with pharmaceutical drugs on TV ads that are invasive and harmful.
I rely on my medical expert (my doctor or professional medical assistant) to prescribe appropriate medications for me and my family.
As with the ban on advertising cigarettes to viewers, pharmaceutical ads should also be banned and eliminated.

MR Corliss excellent letter the sad fact is Fox followers continue to perpetuate the nonsense broadcast by the enrtainment channel. FOX locked in the simple minded and unfortunately these folks have gulped the blue kool-aid so long they’re addicted and happy to continue to wallow in the hog hole that is Fox often at the expense of the great Democracy that America is.
Dennis Praeger, the “conservative” radio show host feels bound by the order established by the bible, hence drag shows are inherently evil. He wouldn’t watch the film but it seems he might cut a little slack for movies like “Mrs. Doubtfire” because it is a comedy. The biblical admonition guiding Praeger’s views on this issue is:
Deuteronomy 22. [5] “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.”
Does this sad man think an omniscient and omnipotent being would care about the clothing his creations wear? Are Scotsmen wearing kilts offensive to his god? Are women in pants suits offensive to the almighty? It is human cultures that draw distinctions between what is appropriate clothing for men and women. Styles are not divinely ordained. This is important because it shows how guided by dogma the religious right is and dogma is often diametrically opposed to reason. If we really lived in a society that adhered strictly to a literal interpretation of the bible, an engaged woman and the man she had sex with should be put to death:

“If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.”
We must stop the “religious” right led by men like Praeger, John Hagee, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Franklin Graham from dictating policy to politicians who prey on the ignorant, brainwashed, and gullible people in the United States. If we don’t, Atwood’s Gilead might be our future.

Thank you for showing the foolishness of the tele-evangelists’ looking to the bible to fit their views. They preach to a whole amphitheater full of people who believe with their hearts and souls everything they say. They throw their support to the far right, convince their worshipers that liberals will take away Christian’s rights to worship, and that they must exert their “Christianity” in our government; insuring that laws are passed to regulate a person’s body and who they are. It is too bad they cannot focus on Jesus Christ’s teachings. His main message is love one another and do not judge others.

DEUTERONOMY 21:18-21 DOES NOT COMMAND PARENTS TO KILL UNRULY CHILDREN

Romans 13:4 is undoubtedly the most commonly employed Bible verse in defense of the civil government’s duty to use violence as a means of enforcing law and order—and rightly so. It reads:
For he [the ruler] is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil (NKJV).
Although the passage evidently refers to the duty of civil authorities, nothing in the text itself implies that the execution of punishment upon those who practice evil is the exclusive domain of civil government. While we often think of the government’s duty to execute justice as entailing a monopoly on the use of violence as a means of punishment, its duty is only unique in terms of the sphere of human life to which it pertains. In fact, Scripture clearly teaches that parents ought to employ corporal punishment—also a form of violence—to discipline their children (Proverbs 23:13-14; 29:15).
Correctly understanding biblical civic ethics entails recognizing that parents’ duty to discipline their children is in fact the basis of the state’s duty to punish evildoers. A common (Arminian) objection to the idea of capital punishment as demanded by the Law of God is the idea that taking the life of a murderer or rapist robs them of time they may have to repent and come to faith in Christ. However, this amounts to a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of criminal law itself. The biblical rationale behind inflicting corporal punishment upon a child—meaning to “deliver his soul from hell” (Proverbs 23:14)—also applies to biblical dictates with regard to capital punishment.
In prison, the inmate longs for a way to escape, either by means of being granted parole or through breaking out (after all, “where there is life there is hope, right?”). On death row, there is no possibility of parole and no time to escape. The convict, faced with the reality of immanent death, has nowhere to turn but to Christ for deliverance. Therefore, capital punishment confronts the criminal with the need for repentance much more than prison sentences tend to do. A capital sentence in the justice system therefore serves the purposes not only of restitution, rehabilitation, and taking away the sting and desire for vengeance on the part of those afflicted and affected by the crime, but it also confronts the offender with the need and urgency of repentance. The duty of the state to punish evildoers is as such evidently rooted in the duty of parents to discipline unruly children.
This fact can also clearly be seen through a proper understanding of one of the most controversial passages in all of Scripture. In Deuteronomy 21:18-21 we read the following:
If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out of the elders of his city, to the gate of the city. And they shall say to the elders of the city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.
This is, of course, a favorite passage of antinomians. How often have we not heard this passage employed against the principle that God’s Law provides the unchanging and perpetual moral standard for all human societies? It is also a favorite passage of atheists, who love to use it as an argument against the authority of the Bible in general. But the representation of the text by haters of God’s Law never actually accords with the text itself. So, for a change, let us look at the text and its context.
First of all, the command must be seen in the context of all of Scripture. It is impossible to understand a passage of Scripture in isolation, and it is exegetically irresponsible to do so. Earlier I referenced Proverbs 23:14 as providing the rationale for inflicting corporal punishment upon a child, namely to “deliver his soul from hell.” The Hebrew word translated here as hell, namely שְּׁא֥וֹל (“Sheol”) literally conveys the place of the dead or hades. Thus, the word can be understood to refer either to physical death, eternal death, or both. And in this particular case I believe it is indeed the latter.
Solomon, the author of Proverbs would have been familiar with the laws of Deuteronomy. Therefore, he wisely advises parents to inflict corporal punishment upon unruly children so they may seek the path of righteousness and avoid becoming the absolutely lost case referred to in Deuteronomy 21:18.
In Deuteronomy 1:31 the love of a father for his children is used as an analogy for the unfathomable love of God has for his children: “in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son.” The importance of parents loving their children is also emphasized in Malachi 4:6, where it is written that God “will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers.” Moreover, in 1 Thessalonians 2:11 the apostle Paul writes that he and his co-laborers “exhorted, comforted and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children.”
Thus, the commands of Deuteronomy 21:18-21 must be understood in light of the normative expectation of texts such Deuteronomy 1:31, Proverbs 23:14, Malachi 4:6 and 1 Thessalonians 2:11—namely that godly parents ought to love, take care of, and desire what is best for their children. It cannot, in fact, be rightly understood apart from this biblical norm. In fact, Fatherly love is such a prevalent biblical message that Jesus reminds us what an immense salvific privilege it is to call God our Father now that we have been lovingly adopted as children into His family (Matthew 23:9).
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 does not teach that parents should stone their lost children to death. It teaches they should bring them to the elders of the city. And one of the reasons for this is so that the elders cannot only judge the behavior of the children but also the intention of the parents. This point needs to be stressed time and again—biblical law simply does not allow parents to stone their disobedient children to death. If parents were to do this, even in ancient Israel, they would be found guilty of murder. What biblical law does teach is that parents who have tried everything to discipline their children on the path of righteousness and have truly lost all hope for their incorrigible children are allowed to bring their children to the court for judgment. If the elders of the city were to find that the parents had any malicious intent in bringing their son for judgment or that they had not yet exhausted all other possibilities, the child would of course be exonerated and certainly not be executed. The same principle was, in fact, applied by Jesus in the trial of the woman caught in adultery, where there were no reliable first-hand witnesses present to participate in her execution, meaning the legal requirements for neither a conviction nor an execution were met.
Biblical law therefore does not simply command parents to kill unruly children. In fact, the very principle contained in the text of Deuteronomy 21:18-21 is ingrained in our human sensus iustitia (sense of justice), as is evident from the reaction of the local community of Eldorado Park in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2018 to the trial of Veronica Raquel Dunn, a 48-year old mother, for killing her drug-addicted daughter, Avent. As anti-drug activist Dereleen James addressed mourners at Avent’s funeral, she publicly told Ms. Dunn, “We will support you throughout this journey. I vouch to you and your family that your daughter’s death is not in vain… It is for us to stand together against the evil that is wiping out the future of Eldorado Park.” This reflected the prevalent sentiment among both parents and leaders of this drug-infested community.[1] They understand what it entails to live with meth and heroin addicts in the same home.
You don’t have to convince me; I already know the bible is of full of contradictions. To explore this topic more fully I suggest “The Bible Handbook”, Revised Edition by W.P. Ball and G.W. Foote. Do you heed this warning from almighty god?:
“All the fat is the LORD’s. It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.” Lev. 3:16, 17
” For whosoever eatest the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.” Lev. 7:25

Profits Slump at CNN as Ratings Plummet
The network is on a pace to drop below $1 billion in profit for the first time in years, according to people familiar with its operations, amid steep declines in TV viewership.
One of the first moves the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery made when it took over CNN was shutting down CNN+, the nascent streaming service that was touted as the network’s bridge to the future.
The next month, when Chris Licht took over as CNN’s chairman, he told employees in his first town hall meeting not to worry about ratings, a mainstay of TV news used as a benchmark for revenue and relevance.
Now, three months into Mr. Licht’s tenure, the network finds itself facing big questions about how it can continue to expand its business with its moonshot streaming service dead and the traditional TV business in structural decline.
Projections from S&P Global Market Intelligence say CNN’s profitability is on a pace to decline to $956.8 million this year. That would mark the first time since 2016 that the network had dipped below $1 billion in profit, according to three people familiar with its operations.
Two people familiar with CNN’s operations said the network’s initial 2022 profitability target was $1.1 billion, which Mr. Licht is on track to miss by more than $100 million. But another person familiar with the matter said that by the accounting of company executives, Mr. Licht was on track to meet a profitability target of roughly $950 million for the year, since the network’s initial budget didn’t account for losses associated with launching the CNN+ streaming service.
However the numbers are crunched, inside CNN the hunt is on for new revenue. To help solve the financial puzzle, Mr. Licht has tapped Chris Marlin, a longtime friend who was recently an executive at the Florida home builder Lennar. Mr. Marlin — whom some CNN employees have taken to calling “Fish Man,” a takeoff on his surname — had no experience operating a cable news network, having worked at the law firms Foley & Lardner and Holland & Knight.
Mr. Marlin has floated a variety of revenue-generating ideas since joining CNN, including striking advertising deals with major tech companies like Microsoft. Mr. Marlin has also mentioned selling sponsorships to corporate underwriters, extending CNN’s brand in China and expanding CNN Underscored, an e-commerce initiative.
CNN’s parent has also cracked down on expenses. In July, CNN employees received a revised travel and expense policy that, among other things, restricts spending on work celebrations for senior vice presidents and below to $50 per person (“no cap for C.E.O. of W.B.D.,” the policy reads). And Mr. Licht has found ways to make coverage more economical, including a recent decision not to send a U.S.-based special events team to Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.
Mr. Licht, who took over CNN in May after a corporate merger made Warner Bros. Discovery its parent company, has tried to sell its staff on a vision for the network that isn’t tethered to traditional TV ratings. During a meeting with employees his first week, Mr. Licht said CNN would generate revenue by pitching advertisers on the network’s “pristine brand,” not just sheer audience size, according to a recording of his remarks obtained by The New York Times.

I do think narcissism leads inexorably to self-destruction for the afflicted.
In a way homo sapiens is suffering from specific narcissism. The idea that we are a special creation, beings of an entirely different order than others, has led us to believe we are independent of nature and not just one strand in the interdependent web of life and the environment. We think we can control or deal with every crisis our wanton exploitation of Earth leads to. I fear if we don’t quickly learn the meaning of humility we will be lost.

Joe….The Watergate prosecutors were ready to charge Nixon they were getting the indictment ready. Then President Ford pardoned Nixon of all crimes. That ended it. Nixon struck a deal with Ford to pardon him after he resigned….If Trump was smart he should have done the same thing.
I think it should be noted that Trump’s illegal and violent schemes to remain in office following his defeat in 2020 were more serious crimes than those committed by Nixon and his henchmen. Guy, I think you are right. Had Trump resigned after getting assurance from Pence that he would receive a full pardon he could have walked from the presidency a free man.
Joe, we will never know. But, I believe if Trump had walked quietly into the sunset after losing the election, his attempts to stay in office illegally and violently were such a threat to our system of democracy and law and order, he would have been investigated and indicted anyway.
I am disappointed that the first indictment is likely to involve misuse of campaign funds in the Stormy Daniels hush money scandal. I would like to have seen the first indictment on charges of attempted interference in a federal election (the call to Raffensperger) or, even better, Jack Smith’s investigation of crimes related to his attempts to reverse the results of the election, including the “Green Bay Sweep” and the 1/6 insurrection.

McCarthy, the putative leader of the House Republicans, tweeted, “Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump. I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions.”
McCarthy is a disgrace.
Hopefully one of these leaders will denounce Trump’s calls for violence.

United States Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-New York), the chair of the GOP Conference in the House of Representatives, suggested on Saturday that former President Donald Trump is a victim of political persecution by “corrupt Leftist prosecutors” who are expected to indict Trump as soon as this upcoming week.
That includes Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis, and Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith – all of whom are investigating Trump for an array of alleged crimes.

Trump was impeached and indicted by the liberal left for asking about the Biden crime family to the President of Ukraine and every day we are finding out more and more truth and evidence of Biden bribing them to have his son’s prosecutor fired. The left has never stopped its partisan attacks because Trump is a danger to all they have built. The swamp is bigger than anyone knew, they don’t want a man beholden to anyone to be POTUS.
None of which has any basis in fact or reality.
The select committee was bipartisan, and most of the sworn testimony implicating him came from Republicans.

No basis in fact or reality is saying this committee was bipartisan. This was a totally partisan committee and the first time ever that the HML could not put who he wanted on the committee. Every impeachment, every trial, every accusation, has been wrong. Look at Roy Moore, where are all of those accusers now that he lost? Look at what the left did to Justice Kavanaugh and Amy Comey Barrett. Lying, cheating, and thieving democrats was never a truer statement.
