UConn’s fast start too much for UAlbany to combat in women’s lacrosse

STORRS, Conn. — The University of Connecticut’s offense started fast and furiously in a 20-12 non-league women’s lacrosse win over UAlbany at Morrone Stadium on Wednesday.

The Huskies (5-3) took 16 shots and scored on seven of them in the first quarter to take a 7-3 lead after that period. Lia Laprise was especially effective, scoring all three of her goals in the quarter.

UConn stretched its lead to 11-6 at halftime. UAlbany (4-5) began the third quarter with a 3-0 run on goals from Bryar Hogg, Allie Maloney and Grace McCauley, but UConn answered with three of its own to end the third.

Rayea Davis’s five goals and two assists led UConn. Kate Shaffer added four goals and three assists.

Maloney had four goals to lead UAlbany, which opens America East play Saturday by hosting Vermont in a rematch of last year’s league tournament championship. Sarah Falk and Shonly Wallace each added two goals. Aislinn Sweeney made 13 saves.
