IN THE POCKET – Dedicated, determined and durable Brad Lawyer both looks and feels a little different on the bowling lanes these days. Several health problems have not only greatly affected his vision, but also stole much of the strength in his right arm. Yet the 54-year-old standout from Schoharie remains a serious competitor in scratch leagues.
The Schoharie High School and SUNY Cobleskill graduate once averaged as high as 239 in the City League and has carried at least a 230 average numerous times in such powerhouse leagues as the Capital District All Star league and the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial league. One season, he recorded a composite 237 average including full seasons in the City League and the Richmondville Keglers. He also averaged 237 in three different bowling centers during the same season — at Cobleskill, Sportsman’s Bowl and Towne Bowling Academy.
Owner of 33 perfect games and 15 800 triples, Lawyer has a high triple of 838.
But the longtime NYS Office of the Comptroller technical support manager ran into some health concerns a few years ago that hit him worse than back-to-back 7-10 splits.
“I was bowling in the USBC Nationals in Syracuse back in 2018, and one week later, I woke up and couldn’t see the numbers on my clock because I had double vision,” Lawyer recalled.
Doctors diagnosed Lawyer with myasthenia gravis, a long-term neuromuscular junction disease that leads to varying degrees of skeletal muscle weakness. In his particular case, the symptoms are double vision.
“I was panicked at first,” he said. “I didn’t know what was going on, but when I found out it wasn’t life threatening, I began to play around with some patches for my eye. I noticed that patches seem to work well for kids with lazy eye, so I started to put a patch over the lens of my glasses, and it seems to work pretty well. But if you look closely at when I bowl, my head is cocked a little so I can see straight ahead.”
Lawyer’s vision challenges aren’t his only problem, however. Neck surgery in 2019 forced him to miss a couple of seasons.
“I had no strength in my right arm. I couldn’t even lift my arm over my head,” he said. “I ended up dropping to a 14-pound ball from a 15-pound ball, and it’s taken me about a year and a half to start bowling better between my perception difficulties and the change in ball weight.
“The patch I wear definitely keeps me bowling, and I joke with my teammates about how I must look. But I’m not doing that badly this year. I’m averaging about 223 in the City League and 217 at Middleburgh Lanes. Last year, I went to the nationals with Marty Capullo’s group, and I shot a 2,006 all-events, which is the best I ever did. I think I had the best score of any of the guys that went with Marty.”
Taught how to bowl by his father at the age of 8, Lawyer has his share of notable achievements on the lanes.
“One thing that sticks out for me is being a high school all-star back in 1986, and I shot a 1,224 for six games, which was pretty good considering the scores were much lower back then,” he said. “Another memory I have is shooting a 743 at nationals, including a 287 game with the first 10 strikes. I probably led the squad, because I remember earning $2,500 in brackets that year.”
Lawyer, who prefers Global 900 equipment, was a member of the winning team in the Capital District All Star league one season and won the Schoharie County singles, doubles and team championships. He also teamed up with Dave Bingham to win the Schenectady USBC doubles crown one year. He’s also rolled at least a 1,900 all-events score three times at nationals under challenging conditions.
“I just don’t have the speed anymore,” Lawyer lamented about the biggest change in his game. “When I first came back from the neck surgery, I couldn’t even get to 12 miles an hour. Then I eventually got up to about 14 or 15 mph. The big thing is I can’t overpower the lanes any more. I still like to bowl, but I keep it in perspective. I’m probably bowling better now than I thought I would after the surgery and my double vision. I just won’t average 230 again.”
Lawyer, who is pondering retirement from the state in the next year or two, is able to work from home part of the time, but he makes sure to visit the office as much as possible to keep things running smoothly.
“I’ve been with the state for 33 years, and I work with the retirement system,” Lawyer explained. “When COVID hit, a lot of us were working from home. At first, after COVID, it felt weird going back to the office, but with me being the manager, we have different teams with different people working in the office one week on and one week off. As the boss, I want people to see my face, so I try to get into the office as much as I can to see everybody.”
Lawyer still earns respect at the office and at the lanes.
“Brad is an unbelievably talented bowler and even more so an incredible human being,” said good friend and teammate Chip Tashjian.
