ALBANY — In an important win for both the conference standings and its psyche, the UAlbany women’s lacrosse team topped Vermont 12-9 Saturday in the teams’ first meeting since Vermont edged the Great Danes in last year’s America East Tournament championship.

UAlbany (1-0 conference, 5-5 overall) got a 5-0 run during the second and third quarters to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 lead. Shonly Wallace scored two of her three goals in that stretch and has a team-high of 32 for the season.

Vermont’s Ava Vasile finished with five goals and one assist, but the Catamounts (1-1, 4-5) never got closer than two goals, 9-7, in the second half.

Sarah Falk led UAlbany with three goals and two assists. Bryar Hogg added two goals and two assists. Haley Phalines had seven draw controls. Defensively, Aislinn Sweeney made six saves, including four in the fourth quarter.

“The defense was so locked in today,” UAlbany coach Katie Thomson said in a school release. “They did a great job preparing the last couple days for this game. Their communication and connection was on point, and they were so controlled while still being aggressive. And Sweeney did a great job in cage today.”

UAlbany plays at UMass Lowell next Saturday.
